Mortar Board awarded national honor

Monday, October 13, 2014

The Achofoa chapter of Mortar Board at Oklahoma State University has earned a Golden Torch Award for demonstrated excellence, outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.

The Achofoa chapter was one of only 24 chapters to receive the award, which was presented by the Mortar Board National Honor Society at a recent national conference in Atlanta. There are more than 230 chapters nationwide.

OSU Mortar Board adviser, Melissa Mourer, said this honor is a source of pride and motivation. "Being named a Golden Torch chapter acknowledges the exemplary work of our past members and reinforces the role our new members play in making the chapter a success."

The Mortar Board National Honor Society, founded in 1918, recognizes college seniors with superior scholastic ability, strong leadership and dedicated service. It’s committed to promoting equal opportunity, advancing the spirit of scholarship and establishing a meaningful exchange of ideas.

The Achofoa chapter of Mortar Board was formed in 1931 on the campus of Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College as an avenue to honor outstanding seniors. Today, the chapter focuses its attention on the publication of the Mortar Board calendar and the selection of the Top Ten Freshmen at OSU in addition to other projects.
