The Oklahoma State University Ferguson College of Agriculture Alumni Society Board has recently recognized Jana Walker with the Early Career Achievement Award.

“The Ferguson College produces so many outstanding graduates, so to be selected for this recognition is incredibly meaningful to me. This award represents more than individual accomplishment — it reflects the mentorship, encouragement and opportunities I was given as a student,” Walker said.

Walker earned a master’s degree in agricultural economics in 2014. While a student in the Ferguson College of Agriculture, Walker served as a graduate research assistant in the Department of Agricultural Economics, working closely with faculty on applied research focused on economic analysis and real-world agricultural issues.

Her work included collecting and analyzing financial data from cooperatives across the state to better understand how member ownership and patronage distributions influence cooperative valuation.

“I had the opportunity to collaborate directly with cooperative leaders, engage with industry professionals and present our findings, which strengthened my ability to communicate complex financial concepts in a practical and meaningful way,” Walker said.

Today, Walker is a certified public accountant serving rural communities across northwest Oklahoma. She works closely with farmers, ranchers and agricultural families to provide tax planning and estate planning services that help preserve generational operations and support long-term sustainability.

In addition to her accounting work, Walker and her husband operate Walker’s Western Store in Woodward and Enid, as well as Walker Mercantile Company, businesses that support local communities and highlight Made in Oklahoma products.

Walker credits the Ferguson College agricultural economics program for preparing her for a career focused on financial leadership and rural economic development.

“The agricultural economics program best prepared me for my career,” Walker said. “The curriculum was intentionally rigorous and analytical, requiring us to think critically, interpret complex financial data and communicate our findings clearly. Each course is built on the next, creating a strong foundation in economic theory, quantitative analysis and real-world application.”

As an alumna, Walker continues to support the Ferguson College and promote the value of agricultural education.

“I continue to serve and support OSU by staying engaged as an alumna and promoting the value of the education and experiences I received there,” Walker said. “I continue to support the Ferguson College because it played a foundational role in my professional development. The mentorship, rigor and sense of community I experienced there directly contributed to where I am today.”
