Dr. John Tetnowski, an Oklahoma State University Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders professor, has received the National Stuttering Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award and been inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame.
The National Stuttering Association is the world’s largest support organization for people who stutter, and fewer than 20 individuals have been inducted into its Hall of Fame.
Tetnowski, who also serves as the Jeanette Sias Endowed Chair in Speech Pathology, has been a member of the National Stuttering Association for 25 years.
“This is such an honor for me because I have dedicated my career to understanding stuttering and providing evidence-based treatments for those who do stutter,” Tetnowski said. “It shows that my research and clinical efforts have been recognized by those who benefit from what I do.”
Dr. Ishan Bhatt, head of CDIS, said Tetnowski’s award and induction are richly deserved honors.
“Through his scholarship, clinical care, mentorship and advocacy, he has transformed the lives of people who stutter and advanced the field of fluency disorders,” Bhatt said. “His impact embodies the Cowboy Code and OSU’s land-grant mission by turning academic excellence into meaningful service. We are tremendously proud of John and the national distinction he brings to our department, college and university.”
According to the National Stuttering Association website, its mission is to support people who stutter, their families and the professionals who serve them by fostering community, expanding access to education and resources, advancing advocacy efforts, and supporting research that drives meaningful change.
Tetnowski is also a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the 2024 Louis DiCarlo Awardee for current clinical and research contributions. He has published over 100 manuscripts in the areas of stuttering and research design and has spoken on five continents.
“This means I’ve had an impact,” Tetnowski said. “All the time in the lab and classroom pale in comparison, because this award comes from the people I serve. It shows that I’ve made a difference.”
