Key Takeaways

  • Oklahoma State University’s Studio Art Capstone Exhibition will be held Nov. 5 from 5-7 p.m. in the Gardiner Gallery of Art.
  • OSU Bachelor of Arts studio art students will exhibit selected works spanning different media and themes from their undergraduate studies.
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts students must exhibit a cohesive body of work and pass a review as part of their graduation requirements.
  • Students gain professional exhibition experience by installing and lighting their artwork and presenting artist talks about their work.

As Oklahoma State University reaches the second half of the fall semester, many studio art majors are preparing for one of their last major projects before graduation — the Studio Art Capstone Exhibition.

The show will feature everything from dramatic ceramics to intricate paintings. These works are a collection of students’ work throughout their undergraduate studies. For Bachelor of Arts students, their displays will contain a variety of different media and themes.

“I’ve enjoyed bringing together my artwork that I'm proudest of because my works vary theme-wise and can be pretty different, but at the same time they're very much me,” said Roya Revels, a BA studio art student who will display her work at the exhibition.

Bachelor of Fine Arts students will display a cohesive body of work they’ve created for the exhibition. To graduate, BFA students must present this work and pass a review. The exhibition is a celebration of this accomplishment before they leave OSU to pursue their careers.

The show itself is a highly professional experience. Students work with Kate Gurley, OSU’s gallery director, to place, light and display their art.

“I am always excited to get my pieces out of the studio and into the gallery,” said Amy Smith, a BFA student who will display large ceramics at the exhibition. “Even when you make something really beautiful, it is so much better to see it in a gallery setting.”

As part of the show, students will give artist talks in which they discuss the themes and messages their works convey.

“My wish for the students is for there to be a big crowd of people looking at these pieces and talking about the issues that are so important to the artists,” said Liz Roth, the instructor of the studio art capstone class.

The exhibition is an opportunity for family, friends and the entire Cowboy family to congratulate these students and learn from the fruits of careful planning and creation.

The event will take place in the Gardiner Gallery of Art on Nov. 5 from 5-7 p.m.
