The Oklahoma State University Department of Wellness and the Employee Wellness programs hosted their first Wellness Walk & Talk of the semester on Thursday.

The walks, which began in June, provide an opportunity for members of the Cowboy family to meet new people while participating in light exercise. Nina Rankin, coordinator of campus wellness and the organizer of the walk, emphasized the event’s social benefits.

“I think people like socializing with people they don't know,” she said. “I made friends in other departments and got to socialize with people that … I don't normally at other events.”

Thursday’s route was the 1.3-mile outer loop of the Cowboy Walking Trails. Participants met at the Edmon Low Library fountain and received free snacks and reusable water bottles. The group consisted of several returning attendees who appreciated the benefit of taking a break during the workday.

“It's nice to be able to stretch and give my brain a little bit of time to work on problems, connect with people and just get a little bit of movement in my day,” said Emily Rice, Honors College advisor and frequent participant in the Walk & Talks.

Attendees also noted that sometimes they get to meet colleagues they have interacted with over email but never get the chance to see.

These Walk & Talks occur once a month, with dates noted on the events calendar. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to stretch their legs while building community.
