Oklahoma State University is hosting a Constitution Day program at 4 p.m, Sept. 17.
The event features former Oklahoma Sen. and Rep. Angela Monson; Dr. Patricia Loughlin, professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of History and Geography at the University of Central Oklahoma; and Dr. Jeanette Mendez, vice provost for undergraduate education and professor of political science at OSU. It will be held in the Edmon Low Library’s Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room.
Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment. In celebration, this year’s event will focus on women’s participation in politics and government, particularly through voting.
“Constitution Day is important for everyone to remember why we have the rights and freedoms that we have here in the U.S.,” said Suzanne Reinman, OSU Library professor of government information. “This year is particularly timely to reflect on the role of women in politics, and our speakers are perfect to discuss the impact of the 19th Amendment.”
The panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Farida Jalalzai, Hannah Atkins Endowed Chair, professor and head of the Department of Political Science at OSU. A question-and-answer session with the audience will follow.
The Constitution Day program is free of charge and open to the public. This year’s program is made possible by sponsors the OSU Library, the Hannah Atkins Endowment and the OSU Department of Political Science, as well as event partners Women’s Faculty Council, the League of Women Voters, the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women and the Stillwater Public Library.
