Symbiotic Relationships: CAS leading the way in transdisciplinary life sciences research

As the hub of life sciences at Oklahoma State University, the College of Arts and Sciences is committed to research that bridges disciplines and creates breakthroughs for the betterment of societies around the world. With hundreds of faculty, staff and students across the departments of biology, psychology, and microbiology and molecular genetics, there’s no easy way to fully capture the extent of transdisciplinary life science research within CAS. However, highlighted here are three of the many projects bringing distinction to the college and the university.
Geography, plant biology professors secure NASA funding for grasslands research using remote sensing

A team of researchers led by Oklahoma State University Department of Geography’s Dr. Hamed Gholizadeh recently received more than $730 thousand in NASA funding to further its research into grassland systems, specifically looking at how management practices like prescribed fire and grazing are impacting biodiversity.

Four CAS student researchers present at Gulf Coast Undergraduate Research Symposium

Four students conducting research within Oklahoma State University’s College of Arts and Sciences delivered oral presentations at the Gulf Coast Undergraduate Research Symposium in Houston in November. CAS students Elyse Cronic, Megan Roach, Kalen Strunk and Ferguson College of Agriculture student Elizabeth Struble attended GCURS, a prestigious undergraduate research conference that provides students around the world with opportunities to present their original research to a peer audience.

Integrative biology partners with Kicker to create interactive Sound of Science exhibits

In 2023, Dr. Liz McCullagh — an Oklahoma State University Department of Integrative Biology professor — partnered with Stillwater audio company Kicker to create the Sound of Science, a series of educational exhibits that allow students to interact with and visualize sound.

Dr. Shawn Wilder, an associate professor in Oklahoma State University’s Department of Integrative Biology, was awarded $541,373 from the National Science Foundation for his project "Testing How Nutrients Affect Offspring Traits Using Cannibalism as a Model System."
