Four Oklahoma State University grad students and their faculty advisers won first place in an international securities trading competition in Toronto last week. Masters students Erin Abercrombie (Tulsa), George Liu (China), Rusty Roush (Arapaho), and Jeff Steichen (Perry) and their advisors, Ali Nejadmalayeri and William Dare, won first place in the securities and trading division and placed 11th overall in the 2008 Rotman International Trading Competition. Students competing in the stock and trading division bought and sold several securities in a simulated market. Oklahoma State’s team won by earning the most profit over two trading sessions, which simulated the frantic bustle of pit trading. Competitors included the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, Penn State and the University of Reading in Berkshire, England. OSU Veterinary College Celebrates 60th Anniversary with special week
The Duane R. Peterson Anatomy Learning Center will be dedicated tomorrow (Friday, March 7) at 1:30 p.m. in memory of Dr. Duane Peterson, a much revered professor whose efforts were instrumental in establishing the veterinary college at Oklahoma State University. The dedication is among the activities marking what Gov. Brad Henry has proclaimed as “Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences Week.” The proclamation recognizes that the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine has been the state’s veterinary college for 60 years since it opened its doors on March 1, 1948. The OSU Center for Veterinary Health Sciences is comprised of the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Boren Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. The Veterinary Center employs nearly 300 faculty and staff and contributes more than $40 million annually to the economic welfare of the State of Oklahoma.
Strathe named honorary Golden Key member
The OSU Golden Key Honor Society has named Marlene Strathe an Honorary Golden Key member for excellence in directing the university as interim president. Honorary members often attend events for the society to speak and to meet current members. The society, with hundreds of members on campus, recognizes outstanding academic achievement. OSU Allied Arts brings off-Broadway musical to campus tonight
OSU Allied Arts will present the off-Broadway musical, “I Love a Piano,” Thursday, March 6, at 8 p.m. at the Seretean Center Concert Hall. Focusing on the life of a piano, this show is a nostalgic musical journey spanning seven decades of American history as seen through the eyes of Irving Berlin capturing the spirit of America from ragtime through the swing era to the optimism of the 1950s. This production is the first off-Broadway musical for Allied Arts to bring to campus in recent years. It will feature a live orchestra supplemented by several OSU music faculty members. Celebrate Women’s History Month with OSU Women’s Programs tonight
OSU Women’s Programs will kick-off Women’s History Month with a performance by recording artist Hollis Lynn Johnson-Sumo at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 6. The program, “Empowering Women Through Songs,” will be held in the OSU Student Union French Lounge, and it is free and open to the public. Johnson-Sumo is an alumna of the music program at Langston University and recently released the album “. . .Basically me and the Family.”
Caniglia to speak on climate change in Oklahoma
Dr. Beth Caniglia will present information on the effects of climate change in Oklahoma on Monday, March 10, at 5 p.m. in Classroom Building room 318. Caniglia conducts research focused at the intersection of social movements, organization and policymaking, especially related to the environmental movement. She has collected extensive data on the Multistakeholder Dialogues at the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development, where she also served as a consultant to the NGO Steering Committee. Her more recent work has turned toward the interaction of science, social movements and public opinion in the creation of environmental policy.
Professor from Kenya to present “Children and War”
Dr. Lucy Ngige, professor of family and child ecology at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya, will speak on “Children of War” Thursday, March 13, at 2 p.m. in 202 Human Environmental Sciences West. Her presentation focuses on her experiences working with the United Nations in Sudan. Ngige has been a family scholar and researcher for 28 years and has received nine international honors and awards in recognition of her scholarship. She has served as a consultant on the rights of women and children for three UNICEF projects in Kenya and is currently serving as vice-chairman of Kenya’s Children in Need of Special Protection Program. Dr. Ngige earned a master’s and Ph.D. in family and child ecology from Michigan State University. All are welcome to the presentation, questions and answers and discussion, and to the reception that follows. This presentation should be of particular interest to CHES students, faculty, and staff.
Real Germans in Oklahoma
The OSU German and Russian Clubs will present a talk by Jonathan D. Reiff on “Real Germans in Oklahoma” on Thursday, March 13, at 7 p.m. in room 213 Classroom Building. Reiff, president of the Central Oklahoma Chapter of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, will talk about the settlement of Western Oklahoma by Germans who had immigrated to the United States from Russia. The talk will feature the origins of these settlers in Germany, life in Russia, and the emigration to America. He will also talk about and demonstrate the exceptional genealogical opportunities available to descendants from the Russian Archives. 2008 applications available for St. Patrick’s Award
The College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology honor the top five graduating students for their accomplishments each year in the areas of leadership, academics and contributions to OSU with the Saint Patrick's Award. Applications are currently available in Engineering North 101. Recipients will be selected on the basis of an application and interview process conducted by a panel of faculty, administration, and students. Applicants must be a CEAT student receiving an undergraduate degree in the 2008 calendar year and available for a 15-minute interview. OSU Archaeology Field School now accepting applications
The College of Arts & Sciences Outreach Office is currently accepting applications for the third field season at the Bryson-Paddock (34KA5) archaeological site, located in north central Oklahoma. This five-week undergraduate/graduate student field school will run from May 27 to June 27 for six credit hours (ANTH 3990: Fieldwork in Anthropology; ANTH 5990), and will be co-directed by Stephen Perkins (OSU; stephen.perkins@okstate.edu), Richard Drass of the Oklahoma Archeological Survey, and Susan Vehik, University of Oklahoma. Bryson-Paddock is one of the most important sites on the southern Plains for understanding early interaction between Indians and Europeans. The total cost of the field school will be $1,170 for in-state or out-of-state students, plus a $40 application fee for non-OSU applicants. Shamrock Softball Tournament this weekend
The Kappa Deltas will hold the 25th annual Shamrock Softball Tournament to benefit Prevent Child Abuse America and the Stillwater Domestic Violence Center March 7-9 at the Stillwater softball fields on Airport Road. The slow-pitch tournament will start Friday at 6 p.m. with an opening ceremony and cook-out dinner. Guests for the opening ceremony include Bikers Against Child Abuse, Trena Sutton throwing the ceremonial first pitch, Stillwater Domestic Violence Center representatives and Girl Scout troops. The goal is to raise $25,000. Tickets are $5 and available at Chi-O clock or at the gate. Free storm spotter training rescheduled for Saturday
Meteorologists from the National Weather Service will provide free instruction on how to observe severe storms safely, how to identify important features, and how to make accurate and timely reports at Storm Spotter Training on Saturday, March 15, at 10 a.m. in the Payne County Expo Center (Hwy 51 and Fairground Road). Emergency management vehicles will be on exhibit, as well as amateur radio operations with information about becoming an operator. NOAA weather radios will also be on display so you can listen to the type of information broadcast by the weather service and find out how it relates to you. The program, which is coordinated by the City of Stillwater Emergency Coordination and Communications Center, is free, open to the public, and suitable for all ages. Support girls soccer and education in Kenya at Saturday auction
A fundraising auction to support the Sasja Fund for girls soccer and education in the slum areas of Nairobi, Kenya will take place at the Stillwater YMCA (204 S. Duck) on Saturday, March 8, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The event will feature a Congolese dance performance, a DVD presentation of the Score for Sasja Fund, and an auction of Kenyan items and official OSU athletics team items. Enjoy the show, eat some mandazis, and bid on a football signed by Coach Gundy. The event is sponsored in part by the OSU Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Athlete Advisory Committee and YMCA. All proceeds will go to the Score for Sasja Fund. The African Student Organization will host its annual African Night at the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts with dinner, dance performances, a fashion show, guest performers and lots more on Saturday, March 8. Women’s History Month event details bone health
As part of Women’s History Month, OSU Women’s Programs and the Seretean Wellness Center will host “Healthy Bones: Awareness, Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis,” at 2 p.m., Monday, March 10 in 415 OSU Student Union. Bernice Mitchell, member of the National Association of Commissions for Women board of directors, will lead the informational presentation that is free and open to the public. In addition, free bone mineral density screenings will be offered by staff from the Stillwater office of Dr. Yasuto Taguchi-Associates. The program is part of Project BONES, the national women’s bone health initiative sponsored by NACW and Proctor & Gamble.
OSU Engineers Without Borders to host fair featuring middle school students’ projects—you’re invited
The Engineers Without Borders OSU chapter will hold an engineering fair that will feature projects from a group of middle school students on Monday, March 10, in Engineering North, room 107 from 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. EWB members have mentored and coached these Stillwater students from designing an experiment, through the scientific process, and to final presentation. Local Girl Scout troops will be selling cookies at Chi-O clock March 10-13
The newly formed OSU organization called Campus Girl Scouts will be hosting local Stillwater Girl Scout troops at a cookie booth sale at Chi-O clock the week before Spring Break. Cookies are $4 a box and the money will go to the girls' troops and the larger Girl Scouts organization (not to our club). The girls will be there the following times: Monday, March 10, from 11 – 2 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m., and Tuesday, March 11—Thursday, March 13, from 3:30-5 p.m. Campus Girl Scouts will also be at the booth with registration forms so interested students can register as an adult Girl Scout and join our campus organization and participate the activities this spring. Alcohol Awareness Week is March 10-14
The Health Education department of University Health Services, Seretean Wellness Center, Student Government Association and Residential Life are partnering to host the annual “Alcohol Awareness Week” March 10-14. The goal of Alcohol Awareness Week is to promote responsible drinking and to create awareness about alcohol use. Each activity is designed to provide students with the information they need to make responsible decisions. OSU-Tulsa to feature Lynn Redgrave in play
Actress Lynn Redgrave is coming to Tulsa to star in her one-woman play, “Nightingale,” on April 8 at the Chapman Music Hall in Tulsa’s Performing Arts Center. The event, which begins at 7 p.m., is presented by the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa. The award-winning play, written and performed by Redgrave, is loosely based on stories about the actress’ grandmother. In addition to the play, Tulsa’s PAC Gallery will display an exhibit by Redgrave’s daughter, Annabel Clark. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, features photographs and journal entries documenting Redgrave’s battle with and ultimate recovery from breast cancer. Seretean Wellness Center – herbs focus of March cooking series
Learning to work with fresh herbs opens up a world of unique flavor and health, from reducing the amount of sodium used in most recipes to soothing and healing the stomach and aiding digestion. Join professional chef Lisa Becklund as she demonstrates a variety of recipes. Classes will be held March 13 (pizza alla rustica, spring salad with seared tuna and sorrel dressing, lavender crème caramel), and March 27 (tossed green salad with fresh beets and goat cheese tossed with roasted garlic and thyme dressing, herb crusted chicken breast stuffed with roasted red peppers, creamy potato soup with tarragon and sweet and sour red onions, lavender-laced lemon bars). OSU Soccer Clinic coming soon
Boys and girls of all ages are being invited to develop their soccer skills with OSU Head Coach Colin Carmichael and OSU Assistant Coach Tony Economopoulos at the OSU Soccer Spring Break Clinic on March 17 and 18 at the OSU Soccer Facility. Coach Carmichael was named 2006 Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year and Soccer Buzz National Coach of the Year Runner up. He is also a USSF “A” licensed coach. The OSU staff will be assisted by current Cowgirl soccer team members who are fresh off a second consecutive trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament. So bring your soccer ball and be ready to have some fun training with champions while working on dribbling, shooting, passing, and receiving skills. Each spring, the Graduate and Professional Student Government Association selects an outstanding master’s student, doctoral student, and faculty member to present with its highest honor: the Phoenix Award. The award recognizes exemplary achievement in leadership, scholarship, professional involvement and university and community service, especially as it relates to involvement with graduate students. The student award winners each receive a $750 monetary award from the GPSGA and the Graduate College, and all winners have their names engraved on the Phoenix Awards plaque located outside the Graduate College offices in Whitehurst Hall. Become a teaching assistant with the Student Academic Mentor (SAM) Program
Need some great resume-building volunteer experience? Interested in helping freshmen feel welcome at OSU? Want to assist an instructor with a freshman orientation class? Then the SAM program is for you. SAMs serve as teaching assistants (TAs) to freshman orientation classes one to two hours per week throughout the fall semester. SAMs chosen for the program will receive a free T-shirt, and TAs with positive performance evaluations will receive a $50 stipend. Tickets are on sale for “A Noteworthy Evening”
Piano performances by OSU music faculty and students will highlight “A Noteworthy Evening” set for April 4 from 7-9 p.m. in Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room of the Edmon Low Library. Tickets are $25 each; $20 is a tax-deductible gift. Proceeds support the Friends’ Music Collection Endowment, which purchases Library materials for the study of music. Seretean Wellness Center to host SmokeStoppers
The OSU Seretean Wellness Center will be holding introductory meetings of SmokeStoppers the first Monday of each month from March through June starting at 5:15 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. The Seretean Wellness Center is located at 1514 W. Hall of Fame. SmokeStoppers programs have been helping people quit smoking for nearly three decades. Some of America's best known companies and largest health plans are sponsoring SmokeStoppers programs for their employees. Wellness tips: Exercise at any age
The benefits of exercise can occur at any age! Studies of mature adults found that those who engaged in regular exercise had better moods. They also had improved sleep and less anxiety.
