Greenwood School of Music presents A Night at the Opera

Wednesday, February 6, 2019

The Oklahoma State University Symphony Orchestra and OSU Opera will present a gala-style performance at the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts concert hall on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Co-directors April Golliver-Mohiuddin and Steve Sanders, along with conductor Thomas Dickey and music director Megan Barth Argo, have been working with students to prepare for this event for more than three months.

“We are actually having the orchestra on the stage, more than 70 students, and 24 undergraduate performers,” Sanders said. “There will be a lot of sound.”

A Night at the Opera will feature highlights from 14 operas, including works by Mozart, Verdi, Sondheim and more.

“We have duets, trios, ensembles, a couple of orchestra showcase numbers and more,” Golliver-Mohiuddin said.

This production includes operas in English, French, German and Italian. The translated lyrics will be projected beside the stage so attendees can fully understand the performances.

“The language barrier is taken out, and it’s just gorgeous music,” Sanders said.

This is an all-age, family-friendly event. It is also OSU’s lone large-scale opera production this year. Tickets are available for purchase at the Greenwood School of Music box office, online at music.okstate.edu ahead of performances until 4 p.m. on Friday or at the door prior to the event. The cost is $10 for general admission and $7 for students and senior citizens.

“This is a true grand night of singing that will feature moments of laughter and sadness,” Golliver-Mohiuddin said. “We challenge you to allow your taste buds to be tempted by the raw heart of opera.”
