MSIS faculty security expert invited to talk on virtualization
Tuesday, March 4, 2014
A Spears School of Business faculty member will speak at the Inquiry-based Cyber Defense Competition (CDC) workshop on March 7 to discuss the virtual Internet system he utilizes for his networking course.
Andy Luse, assistant professor in the Department of Management Science and Information Systems, was invited to talk about a novel, virtual network he uses in his Data Communication class at Oklahoma State University that also has pedagogical implications for CDC.
Luse is attending the NSF supported workshop introducing a new technology that allows educators to utilize their own virtual Internet environment to enable hands-on curriculum in the areas of computer networking and cyber defense competitions. He helped test the product as he utilized it in his course the past fall and spring. He will present how he utilizes it in his course instruction at OSU.
Iowa State University, with support from NSF, is holding the workshop on March 6-8 for faculty members interested in learning how to host their own inquiry-based CDC. The sessions focus on learning about the inquiry-based CDC and the ISERink. ISERink is a virtual network simulating a functional Internet environment to allow students to setup and develop machines and services in a functional setting.
Luse is appreciative of the opportunity to speak about his utilization of the system at the workshop.
“I’m honored to be asked to present my work on my use of this new system,” Luse said. “I’m pleased that what I have developed in my course is of interest to fellow educators and hope that my presentation can help to facilitate the use of this system by others to enhance the classroom experience through hands-on interaction with computer networking technology.”
The new professor got his doctoral degree from Iowa State University in the areas of computer engineering, human computer interaction, and MIS; his master’s in the areas of computer engineering, information assurance, business administration and psychology; and his bachelor’s from Simpson College in computer science.
