Spears School of Business staff members had the largest number of volunteers from Oklahoma State University at the Stillwater United Way Day of Caring event Thursday.

The group of 25 staff members, including Spears School Dean Ken Eastman, was among 480 volunteers who gathered at the Sirloin Stockade to kick-off the Day of Caring with a breakfast before dispersing to complete more than 80 Stillwater projects for the United Way’s 22 partner agencies.

The group spent the morning doing various tasks at Girls, Inc. Lodge, the meeting location for the Stillwater Girl Scouts and other local non-profit groups.

“The Spears School team accomplished a lot at the Girls, Inc. Lodge which involved painting inside trim, staining the porch wood, trimming bushes and trees, raking leaves, and other improvements,” said Julie Weathers, United Way College Coordinator and director of the Center for Executive and Professional Development. “We are so grateful to the non-profit organizations who give much to the community and we appreciate all the volunteers that made this a great day in Stillwater.”

“The United Way Day of Caring is a great event and we had a great crew from Spears Business participate at the job site,” said Eastman. “The group worked hard all morning and really made a big difference at the Lodge. I am very proud of the caring staff we have here at Spears.”

The event was the 21st Day of Caring for the Stillwater Area United Way. The organization held the Day of Caring in two other Payne County cities – Perkins and Cushing. This year had a record-setting 540 volunteers from Payne County.

"This year’s volunteers did so much for our agencies,” said Sheri Carter, Stillwater Area United Way executive director. “A lot of the work that these groups did were things that the agencies could do for themselves or would take time away from their clients.”

All materials and costs for the projects are donated by Stillwater Medical Center, Armstrong Flooring Inc., BancFirst, Bank SNB, Enbridge, OnCue, OSU Foundation, Payne County Bank, Stillwater Home Builders Association, TransCanada Corporation, Arvest Bank, Central Bank of Oklahoma, Community Escrow & Title, Oklahoma Natural Gas, RCB Bank and The Bank NA.
