Business analytics student presents at 2019 JMP Discovery Summit

Wednesday, October 30, 2019

Master in Business Analytics student Katie Coon represented the Oklahoma State University Spears School of Business at the 2019 JMP Discovery Summit Oct. 15-18 in Tucson, Ariz.

Coon presented her poster titled “Tackling Walt Disney Wait Times: The Good, the Bad and The Galactic” at the conference.

“Presenting my paper at the JMP Summit conference was a huge honor,” she said. “I have had multiple opportunities to present with a group of people, but it was a lot more special to me to present my own personal work on a subject I am very passionate about.

“I loved getting to engage with so many types of people that were genuinely interested in what I had done. I received a lot of positive feedback and was informed about other attendee’s experiences at Walt Disney World. I loved getting questions about diving deeper into the analysis from other attendees that I had not thought about. Not only did this drive my curiosity, but it reminded me that my research was important, relatable and in demand by a wide variety of audiences.”

She said that attending the conference was a learning experience and beneficial as she pursues a career in analytics.

“I think the most important thing that I learned at the conference specifically with my project is that simple solutions can provide insightful answers to a problem,” Coon said. “I was worried that others might think my research was too simple, but I received so much positive feedback as well as other attendees wanting to pass my work onto their contacts at the Walt Disney Corporation.

“Other things I learned at the conference that will better prepare me for a career in analytics include broadening my knowledge with JMPs new products, the power of making connections with other attendees and being exposed to all the situations where data can make a powerful impact. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have gone to JMP Summit.”

“I am very proud of Katie in coming up with the idea of researching wait times at Walt Disney and then executing it and presenting her results at the conference,” said Dr. Goutam Chakraborty, SAS professor of marketing analytics and director of the MSBAN program at Spears Business.
