Oklahoma State University professor Dr. Ramesh Sharda has been honored with the Eminent Faculty Award, which recognizes the highest level of scholarly achievement at OSU.
The award was presented to Sharda virtually on March 29. It is normally awarded during the University Awards Convocation in December but due to COVID-19 restrictions, an in-person ceremony was not held last year, and the 2020 honorees were announced in late March.
"Dr. Sharda is an internationally recognized scholar whose work has brought great distinction to Oklahoma State,” said Dr. Ken Eastman, dean of the Spears School of Business. “This award is a fitting recognition of his accomplishments and we celebrate this achievement with him.”
Sharda, who serves as vice dean for graduate programs and research in Spears Business and Regents Professor of Management Science and Information Systems, has received numerous honors over the years. He was named a 2019 Fellow of the Association for Information Systems (AIS), one of only two Americans honored by the international organization representing information systems research, education and practice. Also, Sharda was named a 2018 Fellow of an international society for practitioners of operations research, management science and analytics known as INFORMS. He is only the third person to be recognized as a Fellow by both organizations.
Sharda becomes only the second business school faculty member to receive the Eminent Faculty Award since its inception in 1997, joining former marketing professor Dr. John Mowen (2002).
“Ramesh epitomizes an Eminent Faculty Award recipient,” said Dr. Rick L. Wilson, professor and head of the Department of Management Science and Information Systems. “He’s an internationally renowned scholar, an outstanding and ground-breaking educator, a tremendous mentor to many, including myself, and above all, he remains a humble, caring and outstanding individual. It has been an honor to work alongside Dr. Sharda and this recognition is so well deserved.”
Sharda joined OSU as an assistant professor in 1980 following completion of his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His tenure at OSU’s business school includes a robust research career in data science, analytics and decision making leading to more than 250 published articles resulting in more than 20,000 citations. He has also co-authored well-known textbooks in the field, one now in its 11th edition.
Sharda’s other honors include receiving the OSU Regents Distinguished Research Award twice (2003, 2016) and being inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 2016.
