OSU assists students affected by apartment fire
Tuesday, November 21, 2006
Oklahoma State University is offering temporary housing and other assistance to 23
students affected by an off-campus fire that destroyed 24 single-occupant apartments
Tuesday in Stillwater.
“We arrived on site as soon as possible to help in any way we could,” said Lee Bird,
OSU vice president of student affairs. “Our hearts go out to these students and their
families. We were blessed that there were no serious injuries.”
Bird saluted Stillwater firefighters, police, emergency responders and the American
Red Cross for the work they did. “They are the real heroes,” Bird said. “They were
remarkable and provided wonderful assistance to our students.”
OSU staff members responded quickly to provide counseling and assistance in a variety
of areas. In addition to residential housing to complete the semester, OSU is helping
students replace lost textbooks and medications.
“We are alerting faculty members who have affected students in their classes,” Bird
said. “We encourage the entire campus to be supportive during this difficult time
for these fellow members of the OSU family.”
The local chapter of the American Red Cross is helping students with clothing and
other needs. Individuals wanting to help these displaced students may contact the
Red Cross at 405-372-1833.
