Oklahoma State University sophomore Isaac Washam claimed first place at the 35th International Trombone Festival this summer.
The four-day festival, held July 20-23 in Birmingham, England, is the world’s largest gathering of trombone enthusiasts. Sponsored by the International Trombone Association, it annually attracts thousands of participants, including world-renowned and amateur performers, exhibitors and music fans.
Washam, a Stillwater native, participated in the 18-and-under Gilberto Gagliardi Classical Solo Competition, one of 12 contests held during the festival. He competed with 27 musicians from around the world and was one of three competition finalists selected to perform live at the end of the festival.
“I couldn’t believe that out of the many talented musicians, some from the most prestigious schools in the world, I won first place,” Washam said. “I have worked for many months, practicing every day to achieve perfection in my playing, and winning this award demonstrates the excellence of the OSU music department.”
The International Trombone Association (ITA) is the largest trombone organization, with 4,500 members from 50 countries. ITA aims to promote trombones and trombone-related activities worldwide.
Paul Compton, professor of trombone in OSU’s music department, said Washam’s performance in the competition was a triumph for his students and the university.
“Isaac’s accomplishment has allowed people from around the world to hear what OSU has to offer,” Compton said. “This is great exposure for both him and OSU.”
OSU’s music department has a 100-year heritage of preparing students for various positions in music education and industry. Recent achievements include the acceptance of graduates Robert Gorbet and Jeffrey Missal on scholarship to the Julliard School of Music, and a wind ensemble from the school was honored as the only American group invited to perform at the 37th annual Yamaha All-Japan Band Directors Clinic this summer.
