Second Annual Pig Event scheduled

Friday, November 3, 2006

The Second Annual Pig Event, a statewide barbecue competition at Oklahoma State University, is set for the weekend of the OSU-Baylor game, Nov. 10-11, on the Stillwater campus.

The competition is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, and half of the judges are KCBS-sanctioned, including a few flying in from California for the event, said Shane Lansdown, OSU Student Union marketing assistant.

“We will take up to 35 entries this year, and we already have more than 20 and they’re still rolling in,” he said.

Entry forms are available from Lansdown by phone at 405-744-5954. The entry fee is $100, and categories for the competition are chicken, brisket, ribs and pork. Cooks will set up in the Classroom Building parking lot on Nov. 10.

All proceeds from the competition, which is hosted by the Non-Traditional Student Organization, will go to the Saville Center, which assists children who have been abused by offering them a supportive environment in which they can be interviewed and minimize the trauma of reliving the abuse, said Marie Basler, NTSO coordinator.

On Saturday morning, beginning at 10 a.m., the public can buy a $5 taster’s tray with samples of brisket from cooks entered in the People’s Choice Competition. People will vote for the best brisket, and half of the fees collected will go to the winner and half to the Saville Center.

All firefighters and law enforcement officers are invited to eat for free.

Last year’s competition was won by Red Felix and Phil Kempton of Pepper Creek BBQ of Pawnee, Oklahoma, and it was only their second barbecue competition, Lansdown said.
