OSU library displays historic 46-star U.S. flag
A United States flag with 46 stars that may have flown over the state’s capitol building on the day Oklahoma became a state 100 years ago is now on display at the OSU library. The flag was the gift of David D. Long, whose grandfather William Hobson Long graduated from Oklahoma A & M College (later renamed OSU) in 1923. According to the Long family lore, this flag was hoisted over the state capitol building when Oklahoma was admitted to the Union on Nov. 16, 1907. The flag will be on public display in the Edmon Low Library’s special collections department only through Monday Nov. 19. The special collections department is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the flag is viewable from the department’s window anytime during library operating hours. U.S. flags with 46 stars flew until Jan. 6, 1912, when New Mexico became the 47th state admitted to the Union. This or any item from the OSU library’s special collections and university archives can be viewed by appointment year-round. For more information call (405) 744-6311.

Did you know that fruit and vegetable intake in the United States is declining? Americans eat only about four servings per day of fruits and vegetables. And this includes French fries and potato chips. Only one in five Americans meets the recommended five a day minimum for fruits and vegetables. How does your intake compare? Wellness tips are brought to you by the OSU Seretean Wellness Center, dedicated to making OSU the Healthiest Campus in America. For more information about services for students, faculty and staff, call 744-WELL (9355).
