Oklahoma State University-Tulsa has been recognized by the American Heart Association for promoting health and wellness on campus. OSU-Tulsa is the only university in the state named a “Start! Fit-Friendly Company.”
Angelyn Holmes, OSU-Tulsa coordinator of campus life and wellness, accepted the gold-level award at a presentation yesterday by AHA. Holmes said this recognition is the result of the OSU System's efforts to make OSU “America’s healthiest university.”
“OSU-Tulsa recognizes the importance of creating a healthy environment for our students, faculty and staff,” Holmes said. “We care about the well-being of our community and will continue to develop programs and activities that promote a balance of physical, social and intellectual health.”
AHA created the Start! Fit-Friendly program recognizes employers who champion the health of their employees and work to create a culture of physical activity in the workplace.
Holmes said that while being considered for the gold-level award, AHA took note of the indoor and outdoor walking routes, fitness facilities and intramural programs offered at OSU-Tulsa. In addition, the nutritious food options in OSU-Tulsa’s restaurants and vending machines, as well as the health-risk assessments, education materials, and programs at the Wellness Center, were also praised.
Organizations must achieve specific goals in providing an employee wellness program to be named a Start! Fit-Friendly company. Other Tulsa-area companies qualified for the program include Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Hillcrest Medical Center, NORDAM, Williams and Admiral Express Office Supply.
