OSU center using implants to treat patients with severe emphysema
Physicians at the Center for Respiratory Medicine at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences have implanted a device in three patients that is designed to treat severe cases of emphysema, a serious breathing disorder. The device, called the IBV Valve System, is being used as part of a clinical trial site evaluation. The safety and effectiveness data from the trials will be submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval to market the device in the United States. The implant, which is much less invasive than surgery, may one day offer a new treatment option to improve the quality of life for these patients. The OSU Center for Respiratory Medicine is actively recruiting patients for the trial. The study is open to men and women age 40 to 74 who have been diagnosed with predominantly upper lobe emphysema and severe dyspnea (shortness of breath). ETS-Lindgren has given Oklahoma State University a specialized testing chamber that’s expected to enhance its national research capabilities and teaching opportunities in the area of electromagnetic compatibility. Called the “Smart 80 Reverberation Chamber,” the two-story room will be used to evaluate electronic emissions and test the response of electronic devices at certain wave lengths. Located at the University Multispectral Laboratories at the Richmond Hills complex in Stillwater, the combination of the new $250,000 reverberation chamber, and the anechoic chamber right next to it is found in only six locations in the U.S. It’s expected to attract interest from industry and government sources. SandRidge Energy is employer No. 5,000 recruiting OSU grads
Oklahoma City-based SandRidge Energy Inc. is the latest employer to use HireOSUGrads.com to actively recruit OSU grads for positions. The company is the 5,000th employer to use the online resource that is an essential part of a model for bringing together graduates and prospective employers. HireOSUGrads.com has been so effective that it is now OSU Career Services’ off-campus identity. A campaign that began in January 2003 to increase to 1,000 the number of employers using HireOSUGrads.com by 2005 eclipsed that milestone one year early in 2004. The number has grown steadily since. As part of OSU’s unique career services model, employer relations are conducted at the HireOSUGrads office while each academic college supports a location for student relations, such as résumé and career consultation. The model, combined with OSU graduates’ notoriety for having a hard work ethic is credited for the success.

ECO-Film project screening “Baraka”
The ECO-Film Project, sponsored by ECO-OSU, will present the film “Baraka,” on Thursday, Oct. 11, room 101 Classroom Building at 7:30 p.m. Baraka is an incredible journey through six continents and 24 countries. It has no plot, contains no actors, no script and was painstakingly shot on 70mm film. It is a collection of high quality images, presented in a moving and compelling manner. “Baraka” is an ancient Sufi word, which can be translated as “a blessing, or as the breath, or essence of life from which the evolutionary process unfolds.” For many people Baraka is the definitive film in this style. Breathtaking shots from around the world show the beauty and destruction of nature and humans, coupled with an incredible soundtrack including on-site recordings of the monks of Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery. Wellness tip: Skipping meals
A recent survey indicated that up to 70 percent of Americans skip breakfast. It also found that up to 40 percent skip lunch. Skipping meals can lead to excessive hunger and overeating later in the day or evening. It can also lead to low blood sugar, moodiness, and fatigue. Consider keeping healthy snacks around you. Examples include low fat yogurt, string cheese, dried fruit, whole grain cereals and nuts. They can come in very handy if you need to miss a meal. Wellness tips are brought to you by the OSU Seretean Wellness Center, dedicated to making OSU the Healthiest Campus in America. For more information about services for students, faculty and staff, call 744-WELL (9355).
