College of Arts and Sciences opens student success center

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

STILLWATER, Okla., January 22, 2008 – The College of Arts and Sciences Student Council will host the official grand opening of its new Student Success Center on Jan. 24 at Oklahoma State University.

“The Student Success Center will be a great resource for students,” said council president Jenny Colton, a senior from Oklahoma City. “Being a student, the guidance we receive from advisers and career consultants helps us tremendously during our college years and helps us to obtain jobs after we graduate.”

Guest speakers include OSU Interim President Marlene Strathe and OSU Regents Professor Peter M.A. Sherwood, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Providing remarks also will be Susan Weir, director of student academic services, and Walter Shaw, director of outreach, both of the OSU College of Arts and Sciences.

The center is housed on the second floor of the historic Life Sciences East building and brings together academic, pre-professional and career advising facilities in one seamless operation. Included are student academic services, career services, outreach, and the pre-law and pre-health advising centers.

“The center now allows us to integrate our support for students into one attractive, spacious and well-equipped center in a modern facility,” Sherwood said. “I’m pleased to say that we can more effectively serve our students and enhance the value of their educational experience.”

One of the center’s main features is an academic information center that permits students to become familiar with academic disciplines and programs offered at OSU. A career resources library provides job and internship search information. Students pursuing admission to medical, dental or allied health programs now can access up-to-date resources and professional guidance. The facility is wireless and includes four computer stations for student use.

The center houses 10 academic advisers, three career consultants and student interns, as well as seven outreach staff. The event is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., Jan. 24 in Life Sciences East on the OSU campus. For more information, phone (405) 744-5658 or visit http://www.cas.okstate.edu .
