Friday, August 22, 2008

(STILLWATER, OKLA. – August 22, 2008) -- Pat Dorr, Haskell Cudd professor of accounting at Oklahoma State University, has been named the recipient of the 2007-2008 Richard W. Poole Faculty Outreach Excellence Award.  This prestigious award was created to recognize the honor and contributions made by faculty through the outreach mission of the Spears School of Business.
For more than 30 years, Dorr has contributed to outreach education through offerings to the Spears School of Business at OSU, continuing professional education courses and courses for student study abroad travel.

He recently taught two non-credit programs: “Income Taxation of Estates and Trusts” and “Estate, Gift and Generation-Skipping Transfer Taxation.” Dorr also has participated in the Spears School Summer in London programs, teaching courses to students traveling abroad. He also has taught an on-site credit course about internal auditing for an energy company.

“Dr. Dorr has consistently received excellent ratings in his tax courses and has been a successful instructor during the 28 years he’s been at OSU,” said Julie Weathers, director of the Center for Executive and Professional Development in the Spears School of Business. “He has a following of accountants and tax professionals that are always looking for his courses because they know they will receive excellent information and know that research has been thoroughly done on the information presented.”

Dorr has served as faculty advisor to the Chi Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, a national honorary accounting fraternity, since 1994.  Beta Alpha Psi was named the outstanding student service organization at OSU in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Don Hansen, Head of the School of Accounting in the Spears School of Business said Dorr has done an excellent job in combining excellent instruction and service.

“Dr. Dorr has spent 17 years as faculty advisor to Beta Alpha Psi and was instrumental in connecting the organization to the Summer in London study abroad program,” Hansen said.  “He has been a great instructor for our department and cares about the success of his students.”

Dorr also has contributed to the Stillwater community.  He has coordinated the Stillwater Community Thanksgiving Dinner since 1985, and he has served on the board of trustees for both the Sheerar Center Historical Museum and the Stillwater Community Center. Dorr also assisted in the creation of “Helping Hands”, a weekly column in the Stillwater NewsPress.

“It has been a pleasure to see Dr. Pat Dorr receive this award after his very notable dedication to Outreach and Service,” said Sara Freedman, Spears School dean and Richard W. Poole professor for excellence at OSU.
