The Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center on the Oklahoma State University-Stillwater campus is holding a Crisis Management Seminar on Feb. 19 at 10:30 a.m. in room 201 of the Food and Agricultural Products Center during OSU Research Week (click on the following link for Research Week events http://www.vpr.okstate.edu/researchweek/index.htm.) The seminar will feature Will Daniels from Natural Selection Foods/Earthbound Farm in San Juan Bautista, Calif. His company survived an E-coli outbreak. A free lunch will be provided after Daniels’ presentation. In addition, participants are invited to view research posters and listen to oral presentations as part of a research symposium that will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. the same day, highlighting food and agricultural products research conducted by the FAPC and OSU. Cyberspace Research Summit to generate interest in research
High school and college students from the Stillwater area will learn about the future of energy at the Cyberspace Research Summit starting at 9 a.m., Feb. 8, at Oklahoma State University. The summit is an interactive conference designed to get high school and college students interested in scientific research. Daniel Nocera, energy expert and chemistry professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and George Parks, a research fellow at ConocoPhillips, will discuss energy research and answer student questions through an Internet-enabled videoconference. Cushing, Drumright, Glencoe, Morrison, Perkins and Stillwater high schools, as well as OSU college students, were invited to the 2.5 hour summit, which will be in room 310 of the Math Sciences Building. Actress to provide solutions for the workplace tonight
Actress Judith Hawking will draw on her theater experience tonight to offer advice on handling difficult work situations at 7 p.m. (Thursday, Feb. 7) at the Jerry L. Davis Studio Theatre in Gundersen Hall. The 55-minute, interactive seminar will explore ways to approach difficult situations and to find solutions to problems in the workplace. Award winning journalist to speak during African History Month
In Honor of African American History Month, the Student Union Activities Board will present former Washington Post reporter Patrice Gaines on Friday, Feb. 15, from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theater. Gaines went from heroin use and abusive relationships to become an award winning journalist. One of her works, “Tough Boys and Trouble Those Girls Waiting Outside D.C. Jail Remind Me of Myself,” earned her the National Association of Black Journalists annual Salute to Excellence Award for commentary. She has also written for Essence and Black Enterprise magazines. Gaines has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in a segment about overcoming drug addiction, on NBC's "Dateline," and is currently doing commentaries for National Public Radio.
February is focus on Fulbright Month
February is the beginning of a semester long focus on the Fulbright Grant Program, which funds study and teaching abroad experiences. The first information session is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. in Business Building room 123. Dr. Steve Hallgren, the OSU Fulbright Program adviser will present an overview of the U.S. Student Fulbright program and tell students how to get started on winning a Fulbright grant. Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering department to host benefit cook-off, lunch today
The Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering department will host a $5 chili cook-off and lunch today (Thursday, Feb. 7) from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in 122 Ag Hall to help the family of Jace Reed, a 19-year-old sophomore diagnosed with leukemia in November. Jace re-entered Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City to undergo a bone marrow transplant this week, and his sister, Shelly, will be the donor. The chili lunch is the most recent benefit BAE students, staff and faculty have organized to help defray the costs of the Reed family’s travel between their home in Leon, Okla., and Oklahoma City. International Bazaar set for Feb. 22
International Student Organization at OSU will hold its annual International Bazaar for the spring semester on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Wes Watkins Center. (This is a new date that changes those previously published.) ISO's different cultural clubs and others clubs throughout campus will set up booths sell foods, souvenirs, etc, and to share any other aspects of the cultures around the world. This year’s event will also feature an art exhibition from different cultures and local businesses. Cash and Bursar charge (with Student IDs) are accepted. The Oklahoma State University Chapter of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, is partnering with local businesses to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life with a drawing to be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 5 p.m. The price of one raffle ticket is $1; 10 tickets can be purchased for $5. OSU Theatre to unveil “The Foreigner”
What would you say if you thought no one was listening? The Oklahoma State University Department of Theatre explores this question in their upcoming production of Larry Shue’s “The Foreigner,” a comic farce running from Feb. 13 – 17 at the Vivia Locke Theatre in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts. The Foreigner is set inside a fishing lodge in rural Georgia and demonstrates what can happen when a group of devious characters must deal with a stranger who (they think) knows no English. Full of mistaken identity and sight gags, The Foreigner will run Feb. 13 - 16 at 7:30 p.m., with a 2:30 pm matinee on Feb. 17. Admission is $10 for OSU students and senior citizens and $12 for general admission. Tickets will go on sale the Monday of performance week. The Box Office, located in the Vivia Locke Theatre lobby, will be open Monday through Friday from noon until 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person or at the door. Speechcraft 2008: sure fire confidence builder – today
The two local Toastmaster Clubs are providing a short course opportunity “Speechcraft 2008” which starts Thursday, Feb.7, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and will be held once a week on Thursdays through March 13 in Room 001 in the basement of Agriculture Hall. Opera and orchestra to honor Pulitzer-Prize winner
The OSU Opera and Orchestra will present “The Medium” and “The Telephone” as a tribute to opera legend Gian Carlo Menotti at 8 p.m., Feb. 8 and 9, in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts. The tribute to Menotti will celebrate his 88-year career and mark the anniversary of his death on Feb. 1, 2007. Prior to each performance (at 7 p.m.), special guest Kate Butler will lecture. Butler, a mezzo-soprano, worked with Menotti for many years. She will also join guest pianist Michael Cotton at 2:30 p.m., Feb. 10, in the Willard Hall Living Room to conclude the tribute with “Gli Amanti Impossibili,” a lecture recital exploring the songs and life of Menotti. The Oklahoma Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation is presenting a seminar on research ethics featuring Drs. Kamm Lecture on Feb. 19 to feature Dr. Michael A. Olivas
Dr. Michael A. Olivas of the University of Houston Law Center will deliver the 16th Robert B. Kamm Distinguished Lecture in Higher Education at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater on Feb. 19. Olivas, the William B. Bates Distinguished Chair in Law at the University of Houston Law Center and director of the Institute for Higher Education Law and Governance, will speak about “DREAM On: Higher Education, Immigration, and National Security” at 1:15 p.m. in 010 Willard Lecture Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public. A question and answer session will follow his speech and a reception will be held in the Willard Living Room from 3:30- 4:30 p.m. The Kamm Lecture is an annual policy-impacting lecture/symposium that brings private and public sector leaders together at OSU to discuss critical, cutting-edge issues that will shape the future of Oklahoma in general and the state’s higher education in particular. “Defining Program Outcomes for Assessment” webinar set for Feb. 27
Faculty are invited to participate in a webinar presentation on "Defining Program Outcomes" Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. in 103 ATRC. The 90-minute session will include on-screen presentations and multiple opportunities for questions. The presenter, Dr. Gloria Rogers, is the co-author of “Stepping Ahead: An Assessment Plan Development Guide,” and an interactive CD, “Assessment Planning Flowchart” to aid programs in assessment plan development. Although the webinars are presented by ABET, Inc., the organization that accredits engineering schools, the presentation will be useful for faculty in all disciplines.
