OSU student leaders recognized, award renamed in honor of Huss
Deleea Allcorn of Inola and Erica Smith of Stillwater were honored with outstanding student leader awards at the recent Southwest Association of College and University Housing Officers conference in Frisco, Texas. Allcorn, a resident assistant in Wentz Hall, received the Gene Ward Outstanding Student Leader Award for Oklahoma. Smith, a residence director in Wentz Hall, was awarded the newly renamed Bob Huss Outstanding Graduate Student Award for Oklahoma. The graduate award was renamed in honor of Dr. Bob Huss, director of residential life at OSU, who will retire July 1 after 23 years as director. In that time, residence halls have grown from nine to 25 and the national residence halls organization has honored OSU as its school of the year more than any other in the country.
Ed Paulin remembrance available online
Go to KOSU (www.kosu.org ) to listen to a remembrance of Dr. Ed Paulin, former KOSU general manager and OSU Journalism School professor, who died Saturday in Stillwater. Paulin was inducted into the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1990. He was recognized as Ohio’s Top Sports Broadcaster in 1960. Paulin came to OSU to serve as general manager of KOSU-FM and ultimately served as chairman of the OSU Radio-TV-Film Department until 1984. He retired in 1990. Ed Paulin was 83. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sunnybrook Christian Church in Stillwater.
OSU’s David Jankowski earns NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship
Oklahoma State’s David Jankowski is the only Big 12 cross country runner to receive an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and one of only 12 runners nationally. Recently named to the 2007 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s All-Academic Team, Jankowski placed ninth at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet to earn all-region honors and help the Cowboys to a first-place team finish at the event. An all-Big 12 and Academic all-Big 12 honoree in 2007, Jankowski placed 67th at the NCAA Championships. He is a senior majoring in journalism. OSU advertising professor honored as newsmaker
The Tulsa Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications will honor Dr. Jami Fullerton as 2008 Newsmaker later this year. Fullerton, associate professor of journalism and broadcasting at OSU-Tulsa, has received national recognition for the book that she co-authored, “Advertising’s War of Terrorism: The Story of the U.S. State Department’s Shared Values Initiative.” The book cites internal Bush administration documents and research to assert that the anti-terrorism advertising campaign was successful in fostering more positive attitudes toward America in the Middle East and elsewhere. She has spoken nationally on the topic at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., the University of South Carolina and the University of Nebraska and locally at the Tulsa Press Club. Fullerton will receive her award at the Southern Hills Country Club during the Newsmakers Luncheon on May 6.

The Hispanic Student Association will show “Innocent Voices” about the Salvadoran Civil War in the 1980s from 6 – 8 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, March 4) in room 207 in the Classroom Building. Everyone is invited to join in the HSA general meeting from 6 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the Student Union, room 224. Everybody is also invited to enjoy the free food, fashion and dancing (D. Safety awareness seminar tonight
In response to recent attacks in Stillwater, the Off Campus Student Association will hold a personal safety seminar tonight (Tuesday, March 4) at 6:30 p.m. in 108 Engineering North. Host a prospective Cowboy
“This is the Life” needs on campus students to host a prospective OSU student for an overnight recruiting event on April 5 and 6. “This is the Life” is a two-day, one night event where prospective OSU students share the life of a current OSU student for the weekend. Participants will take part in events throughout the weekend and spend the night in a residence hall with their host. Participants are exposed to life at OSU and preview our campus housing selection. Pick up your application to be a host for “This is the Life” at a front desk near you, or come see us at the Chi-O clock through Wednesday, March 5. Celebrate Women’s History Month with OSU Women’s Programs
OSU Women’s Programs will kick-off Women’s History Month with a performance by recording artist Hollis Lynn Johnson-Sumo at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 6. The program, “Empowering Women Through Songs,” will be held in the OSU Student Union French Lounge, and it is free and open to the public. Johnson-Sumo is an alumna of the music program at Langston University and recently released the album, “. . .Basically me and the Family.”
Seretean Wellness Center to host SmokeStoppers
The OSU Seretean Wellness Center will be holding introductory meetings of SmokeStoppers every Monday from March through June starting at 5:15 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. The Seretean Wellness Center is located at 1514 W. Hall of Fame. SmokeStoppers programs have been helping people quit smoking for nearly three decades. Shamrock softball tournament this weekend
The Kappa Deltas will hold the 25th annual Shamrock Softball tournament to benefit Prevent Child Abuse America and the Stillwater Domestic Violence Center March 7-9 at the Stillwater softball fields on Airport Road. The slow-pitch tournament will start Friday at 6 p.m. with an opening ceremony and cook-out dinner. Guests for the opening ceremony include Bikers Against Child Abuse, Trena Sutton throwing the ceremonial first pitch, Stillwater Domestic Violence Center representatives and Girl Scout troops. The goal is to raise $25,000. Tickets are $5 and available at Chi-O clock or at the gate. Everyone is invited to African Night on Saturday
The African Student Organization will host its annual African Night at the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts with dinner, dance performances, a fashion show, guest performers and lots more on Saturday, March 8. The theme is "UMOJA" meaning "Spirit of Togetherness". The show starts by 5 p.m. and there will be a dinner with a variety of African Dishes served beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are being sold in front of the Student Union Bookstore from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. They are $8 before March 8 and $10 on March 8. OSU Engineers Without Borders to host fair featuring middle school students’ projects—you’re invited
The Engineers Without Borders OSU chapter will hold an engineering fair that will feature projects from a group of middle school students on Monday, March 10, in Engineering North, room 107 from 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. EWB members have mentored and coached these Stillwater students from designing an experiment, through the scientific process, and to final presentation. Come meet these middle school students, enjoy some Charlie's Chicken, and watch them be rewarded for a semester of hard work. Local Girl Scout troops will be selling cookies at Chi-O clock Mar 10-13
The newly formed OSU organization called Campus Girl Scouts will be hosting local Stillwater Girl Scout troops at a cookie booth sale at Chi-O clock the week before Spring Break. Cookies are $4 a box and the money will go to the girls' troops and the larger Girl Scouts organization (not to our club). The girls will be there the following times: Monday, 10, from 11 – 2 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m. and Tuesday, 11 – Thursday, 13 from 3:30-5 p.m. Campus Girl Scouts will also be at the booth with registration forms so interested students can register as an adult Girl Scout and join our campus organization and participate in our activities this Spring! Alcohol Awareness Week is March 10-14
The Health Education department of University Health Services, Seretean Wellness Center, Student Government Association and Residential Life are partnering to host the annual “Alcohol Awareness Week” March 10-14. The goal of Alcohol Awareness Week is to promote responsible drinking and to create awareness about alcohol use. Each activity is designed to provide students with the information they need to make responsible decisions. The weekly activities include: An alcohol awareness booth across from the bookstore in the Student Union from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; a “Victim Impact Panel” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in the Seretean Wellness Center Lecture Hall, and “Reality Check” reenactment of a drinking and driving accident on Thursday, March 13 at 6:30 p.m. in Kerr-Drummond Mezzanine. OSU-Tulsa to feature Lynn Redgrave in play
Actress Lynn Redgrave is coming to Tulsa to star in her one-woman play, “Nightingale,” on April 8 at the Chapman Music Hall in Tulsa’s Performing Arts Center. The event, which begins at 7 p.m., is presented by the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa. The award-winning play, written and performed by Redgrave, is loosely based on stories about the actress’ grandmother. In addition to the play, Tulsa’s PAC Gallery will display an exhibit by Redgrave’s daughter, Annabel Clark. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, features photographs and journal entries documenting Redgrave’s battle with and ultimate recovery from breast cancer. Seretean Wellness Center – herbs focus of March cooking series
Learning to work with fresh herbs opens up a world of unique flavor and health, from reducing the amount of sodium used in most recipes to soothing and healing the stomach and aiding digestion. Join professional chef Lisa Becklund as she demonstrates a variety of recipes. Classes will be held March 6 (giant tarragon soufflé, roasted lemon rosemary sweet potatoes, herb crusted port tenderloin, basil ice milk with mini anise biscotti), March 13 (pizza alla rustica, spring salad with seared tuna and sorrel dressing, lavender crème caramel), and March 27 (tossed green salad with fresh beets and goat cheese tossed with roasted garlic and thyme dressing, herb crusted chicken breast stuffed with roasted red peppers, creamy potato soup with tarragon and sweet and sour red onions, lavender laced lemon bars). Habitat for Humanity's Shack-A-Thon is your chance to do just that as student groups construct shacks from materials commonly found in dumpsters, collect donations from students during the day, and sleep in their shacks at night April 2-3. All the money raised helps Habitat for Humanity construct more homes for those less fortunate. OSU Soccer Clinic coming soon
Boys and girls of all ages are being invited to develop their soccer skills with OSU Head Coach Colin Carmichael and OSU Assistant Coach Tony Economopoulos at the OSU Soccer Spring Break Clinic on March 17 and 18 at the OSU Soccer Facility. Coach Carmichael was named 2006 Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year and Soccer Buzz National Coach of the Year Runner up. He is also a USSF “A” licensed coach. The OSU staff will be assisted by current Cowgirl soccer team members who are fresh off a second consecutive trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament. So bring your soccer ball and be ready to have some fun training with champions while working on dribbling, shooting, passing, and receiving skills. Applications available for Phoenix Award
Each spring, the Graduate and Professional Student Government Association selects an outstanding master’s student, doctoral student, and faculty member to present with its highest honor: the Phoenix Award. The award recognizes exemplary achievement in leadership, scholarship, professional involvement and university and community service, especially as it relates to involvement with graduate students. The student award winners each receive a $750 monetary award from the GPSGA and the Graduate College, and all winners have their names engraved on the Phoenix Awards plaque located outside the Graduate College offices in Whitehurst Hall. Become a teaching assistant with the Student Academic Mentor (SAM) Program
Need some great resume-building volunteer experience? Interested in helping freshmen feel welcome at OSU? Want to assist an instructor with a freshman orientation class? Then the SAM program is for you. SAMs serve as teaching assistants (TAs) to freshman orientation classes one to two hours per week throughout the fall semester. SAMs chosen for the program will receive a free T-shirt, and TAs with positive performance evaluations will receive a $50 stipend. Water Resources Workshop
Join Jeri Fleming of the Oklahoma Water Resources Research Institute and Marilyn Jacobs, Steve Beleu, and Clif Broadworth of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries as they discuss legislation and water-planning issues in Oklahoma on Friday, March 28, in the Edmon Low Library. There will be two sessions, “Oklahoma Water Resources and Legislation,” from 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. and “Online Water Data from Federal and State of Oklahoma Resources,” from 2 – 4 p.m. Learn how to track state legislation affecting all aspects of Oklahoma water including state water rights, the statewide water plan and protecting existing resources; how to search the Oklahoma statutes for current laws concerning water; find attorney-general opinions and Oklahoma case law; use online water data resources from federal and state agencies (hands-on). Wellness tip: Watch for glaucoma
Detect and treat glaucoma early. Experts recommend regular eye exams every 2 to 4 years from age 40-64 and every 1 to 2 years beginning at age 65. Start sooner if you are at greater risk. Risk factors include a family history of glaucoma, previous eye injury, having diabetes and a history of steroid use. Left undetected, glaucoma can lead to blindness.
