Students invited to Community Thanksgiving Dinner
The 24th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner is set for Thursday, Nov. 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on Duck and 7th St. The organizer, Dr. Pat Dorr, is extending a personal invitation to all students to attend the free dinner, which includes turkey and all the trimmings.

Conserve energy over the holidays
With Thanksgiving break upon us, OSU Energy Managers are reminding everyone to turn off all lights and unplug all electrical devices, including computers, speakers, monitors, printers, etc. Fans, chargers and radios are are also included. Small savings in individual areas add up to huge savings across campus when you take a few minutes to ensure that “off is OFF” in your area.

Yen is elected IEEE Fellow
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has elected Dr. Gary Yen, from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, to its Class of 2009 Fellows. The IEEE is the world’s leading professional association for the advancement of technology. Yen is cited for his contributions to Intelligent Systems and Control. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership which the technical community recognizes as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement. For more information, click here.

Executive Management series to feature George Will

George Will, syndicated columnist for The Washington Post, will present “The Political Argument Today” on Thursday, Dec. 4, from 11:45 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City. Will, a former contributing editor of Newsweek magazine and Pulitzer Prize winner in 1977, lives and works in the Washington, D.C. area. To register for the presentation and luncheon, click here.

CEAT Design Day next Tuesday
The College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology will host CEAT Design Day on Tuesday, Dec. 2 for interested students to learn about potential university majors and lifetime careers by viewing design projects created by current students. Held in an open house format, visitors have the opportunity to interact directly with designers to answer any questions they may have about the profession. OSU-Tulsa trustees to consider TV station on campus

OSU-Tulsa officials will consider a proposal for an upcoming development project with the OETA to construct a TV studio on the campus. The partnership would benefit students in journalism and broadcasting with internships and jobs. The television station has secured funding to build a new 10,000 square-foot studio. The OETA proposal will be presented at the OSU/A&M Regents meeting next month. For more details, click here.

Trans Siberian Orchestra to benefit Rise School
The Trans Siberian Orchestra has selected the Rise School of Stillwater as the donation recipient for its Tulsa concert. Every year the orchestra chooses an organization with a music program to receive a portion of ticket sales from a specific performance. Rachel Stallings, Rise School director, will be presented a check during the concert on Monday, Dec. 29, at 7:30 p.m. The Rise School will also receive a partial donation from the Oklahoma City concerts on Sunday, Nov. 30, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available for the three performances and can be purchased on line at http://www.trans-siberian.com/intro.html.

OSU Library conducting online faculty survey
The OSU Library is conducting an online service satisfaction survey for faculty to help improve services. Dean Sheila Johnson is e-mailing invitations to faculty participants to complete the 12-minute survey by a Dec. 10 deadline. Faculty participants may elect to be included in a prize drawing for an iPod Touch or an 8.1 megapixels digital camera. Autographed football and basketball to be auctioned for United Way
The College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology is holding a silent auction for an OSU team-autographed football and basketball to support Stillwater United Way. The Ranchers Club holiday hours
The Ranchers Club will be closed for lunch Tuesday, Nov. 25, through Friday, Nov. 28 and open Friday and Saturday evening 5:30 – 9 p.m. for dinner.

Extra parking now available at 4th and Hester
The parking lot at 4th and Hester streets is now available for commuters with a green parking permit. The lot adds 275 parking spaces to the OSU campus. A limited number of green permits will be available for sale at the Parking Office at a pro-rated price. Silver commuter permit holders will have the option of switching permits for a $10 fee. Hargis, DeSilva and Dunbar inducted as honorary Golden Key members
Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis, Dr. Udaya DeSilva from the Animal Science Department, and Linda Dunbar from the International Students Office were inducted into the Golden Key honor society. Hargis also served as keynote speaker for the ceremony last Friday at the ConocoPhilips Alumni Center.  Golden Key is a internationally-recognized honor society that invites the top ten percent of juniors, seniors and graduate students at OSU to join each fall. This year, 172 new student members were inducted into the OSU chapter. OSU students to host International Fair tomorrow
The Fourth Annual International Fair, sponsored by the College of Education and the School of International Studies, is set for tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 21) in the Wes Watkins Exhibit Hall. Students with the International Student Organization will serve as presenters in four booths, each of which will represent a specific country. They will teach groups of 4th grade students about significant cultural practices through various hands-on activities. OSU choral music on Sunday
Come enjoy choral music at its best as the OSU University Singers and Womens' Choir present "Music, Spread thy Voice Around," featuring works by Haydn, Handel, Morely, and others on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 23, at 2:30 p.m. in the Seretean Center Concert Hal. Tickets at the door are $7 for adults and $5 for students.

Help needed for community holiday dinner
Donations of cooked turkeys, hams and other Thanksgiving food items are needed for the free community Thanksgiving dinner. Turkeys and hams should be dropped off at the Stillwater Community Center between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. next Wednesday, Nov. 26.  Other food items can be dropped off at the Methodist Church Family Living Center November 26th or Thanksgiving morning.  In addition to food donations, volunteers are also needed to help prepare and serve the meal and for a variety of other jobs. If you can’t work or donate food, drivers to deliver meals are needed on Thanksgiving day from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.  For more information contact Pat Dorr at (405) 624-8689.

NCAA Cross Country Championships to get live coverage

OSU’s No. 2 ranked men’s cross country team will be gunning for the national title Monday, Nov. 24, at the NCAA Cross Country Championships at Terre Haute, Ind. The event will be shown live on CBS College Sports Network and streamed online via NCAA.com. Mortar Board to present “Reading is Leading” for kids
Mortar Board is hosting “Reading is Leading,” an annual event to promote literacy for Stillwater children, this Saturday, Nov. 22, from 2-4 p.m. in the Student Union Oklahoma Room. Any OSU faculty, staff or students with children are encouraged to bring them out to this event. “Reading and Leading” is a come and go event with snacks and Thanksgiving themed crafts. All children who attend will be allowed to take free books home to read. Admission is free.

Adopt an orange flamingo for United Way

A flock of rare orange Sunset flamingos have colonized at Theta Pond and the OSU community is encouraged to adopt them. The flamingos make great gifts and can be delivered to anyone on campus. All of the proceeds go to the OSU United Way campaign. Orders are being taken now until tomorrow, Nov. 21. National Survivors of Suicide Conference at OSU-Tulsa on Saturday
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will sponsor its 10th annual National Survivors of Suicide Day on Saturday, Nov. 22, at OSU-Tulsa starting at 10 a.m. in North Hall 205. The conference will provide support, healing, information and empowerment for the survivor community. It is one of 170 simultaneous conferences that will feature a 90-minute broadcast with a panel of experienced survivors and mental health professionals. OSU offers Thanksgiving food safety tips
A food expert at the Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center at Oklahoma State University is recommending ways that individuals can enjoy a safe Thanksgiving with family and friends. Food microbiologist Peter Muriana emphasizes proper food handling and preparation as important to avoiding foodborne disease. “Food safety isn’t just for the food manufacturing plants, but it’s important in the home as well,” said Muriana. Following some water damage from fire sprinklers, the City of Stillwater Multi Arts Center will hold its rescheduled grand opening for the holiday gift gallery this Saturday, Nov. 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. with a special sneak peak for Friends of Multi members at 9 to noon ($10). Cowboy wellness success story
Eight employees of OSU Student Union Meeting and Catering Services recently participated in an 8-week departmental fitness challenge and lost a total of 55 pounds, 26.5 inches, and 16.6 percent body fat. A recent study found that those who keep a daily diary on the food they eat and their physical activities lost twice as much weight as those who didn’t, and the longer they kept the diary, the more weight they lost. The idea that simply writing down what you eat can encourage you to consume fewer calories is one reason experts believe food diaries work. Another is that they can help you identify cravings and eating triggers. Globalization of American higher education
Lloyd Armstrong, Jr., professor and provost emeritus from the University of Southern California, will speak on “Globalization of American higher education: approaching a tipping point” on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 1:30 – 3 p.m. in the Oklahoma Room at the Student Union. Armstrong served as USC provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at a time when the university increased greatly in quality and reputation. His current research interests are focused on the future of research universities, with special emphasis on the effects of globalization and the role of creativity and innovation. OSU math contest helps students buck trend
More than 200 high school students from throughout the state of Oklahoma recently competed in an annual high school math contest sponsored by the Department of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University. OSU awarded scholarships to the top-scoring seniors in the contest ranging from $500 to $1,500 if they enroll here. A recent study showed that even the most talented math students are being discouraged from advancing in the field because of cultural attitudes in the United States. The 2009-2010 Bailey Family Memorial Trust Scholarship applications are now available in the Arts and Sciences Student Success Center, 213 Life Sciences East. Psi Chi to induct new members and recognize distinguished alumni

The OSU Chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, will induct 49 new members on Friday, Nov. 21, at 5 p.m. in the Centennial Lounge in the Student Union. The first Psi Chi Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to Dr. Arthur Rousseau, who graduated from OSU in 1974 and served as president of the OSU Chapter of Psi Chi in his senior year. Annual scholarship fundraiser set at OSU-Tulsa
Oklahoma State University-Tulsa will host the eighth annual Vintage O-State Wine Tasting and Scholarship Fundraiser this Saturday, Nov. 22. The event, which is sponsored by the Tulsa County Chapter of the OSU Alumni Association and OSU-Tulsa, will take place from 7 - 9:30 p.m. in the Main Hall Commons. Proceeds from ticket sales and a silent auction will benefit Tulsa-area high school students that plan to attend OSU. Over $160,000 in scholarships have been awarded in the last 12 years. Tickets to the event are $65 each for association members and $75 each for non-members. The event will be limited to the first 400 reservations. OSU Parking Services to move soon
OSU Parking Services will move to the new Multi-Modal Transportation Terminal at the corner of Monroe and Hall of Fame starting Monday, Nov. 24. Additionally, the BOB shuttle, which runs between Tulsa and Stillwater, will also shift its operations from the Student Union to the new terminal in mid-December. The new terminal serves as the hub for THE BUS and the community transit system. Seating areas and vending services will be provided inside the terminal for passengers waiting to catch their connecting bus. The U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note Jazz Ensemble to perform
The United States Air Force Airmen of Note Jazz Ensemble from Washington, D.C., will be performing at the Stillwater High School Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 8 p.m.  The Airmen of Note is a premier jazz ensemble created in 1950 to carry on the tradition of Glenn Miller's Army Air Corps dance band. The concert is free, but tickets are required to guarantee seating priority until 15 minutes before the performance.  Tickets are available from sponsors, including the OSU Music Department (office), Stillwater National Bank and the Stillwater NewsPress. Harvest II results—thank you
Participants in the Harvest II food drive at OSU collected 1,340 pounds of food this year, which will be distributed among agencies and shelters in Stillwater and Perkins. The winner of this year’s contest was Information Technology Software Services with 1,088 points—so it gets the traveling trophy. Second place is the library with 921 points and third place is the English department with 907.

Pie sale for United Way
Journalism and Broadcasting will be holding a pie sale on Thursday, Nov. 20 on the first floor of the Paul Miller Building starting at 10 a.m. There will be several types of pie to choose from at $1 a slice. Microbiology and molecular genetics will hold a raffle for some art pieces on Friday, Nov. 21, at 3 p.m. in 307 Life Sciences East. Logo and slogan contest for bowl tickets and airfare
The Count Stillwater Committee is calling on Stillwater residents to develop a logo with slogan that will encourage people to participate in the upcoming 2010 Census. The winning design will be used as the official Stillwater census image, and the winner will receive two OSU Bowl Game tickets and airfare for two to the bowl-game site. The deadline for submission is Thursday, Dec. 4, at noon. The contest is open to all Stillwater residents age 18 and over and amateur and professional designers are encouraged to participate. Nutritional Sciences seeking individuals for blueberry drink study
Are you overweight? Do you have high blood pressure or blood sugar? Find out if you qualify for a eight-week study that will test the health effects of a blueberry drink. Study participants will come to the fourth floor in the College of Human Environmental Sciences for testing. Study participants will receive compensation for each visit. Nutrition labels often claim that a product is a “good” or “excellent” source of a nutrient. What do these terms mean? “Good” means that one serving provides between 10 - 19 percent of the daily value (or daily need) for that nutrient. “Excellent” means that one serving provides 20 percent or more of the daily value per serving. If you are concerned about getting enough of a particular nutrient, look for these terms on the nutrition label. “State of the University” to highlight fall faculty meeting

The OSU Fall General Faculty Meeting will feature OSU President Burns Hargis with “The State of the University” on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m. in the Student Union Theater. The speech will be followed by a question and answer period as well as special recognitions.  

OSU earns national recognition for publication
The American Society of Agronomy has honored Oklahoma State University’s No-Till Team of scientists and educators with its certificate of excellence for its educational how-to publication, “No-Till Cropping Systems in Oklahoma.” The award recognizes the way in which DASNR is assisting state producers in taking advantage of the benefits of no-till systems. The 80-page publication converts hard science to reader-friendly terminology and uses visuals to help producers adopt no-till cropping systems for wheat, soybeans, cotton, sorghum and corn. Guest lecturer to speak on shaping earth’s landscape
Dr. Billie Lee Turner II will talk about “Land Architecture, Sustainability, and the Southern Yucatan” on Monday, Nov. 17, from 3:30 – 5 p.m. in room 313 Classroom Building. Turner is Gilbert R. Instructor receives teaching award

OSU’s Jeff Hattey has been named a 2008 recipient of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Agriculture Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award. The honor is one of six regional teaching awards presented by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, which officially recognized Hattey Nov. 9 in Chicago. An error that resulted in a two percent overcharge of City of Stillwater electric customers between July and October will be addressed with credits on bills starting Nov. 20, according to Stillwater Director of Finance Marcy Alexander. The Staff Advisory Council along with Provost Dr. Marlene Strathe and Vice President Gary Clark honored several outstanding staff members in the Student Union Theater Wednesday, during the annual Staff Awards and Recognition Day. The 2008 Distinguished Service Award recipients were honored for their outstanding performance, attitude and value in the workplace. They include Roy Ball, Margaret Struble, Helen Daggs, Patricia Mann, Sheryl Johnson, Dean Wallace, Jerry Ball and Jack Patton. Brown to speak on Monday

The School of Fire Protection and Safety presents Warren K. Brown, president, American Society of Safety Engineers, to speak on “ASSE Today and Tomorrow” at 7 p.m. Nov. 10, 102 ATRC. ASSE was founded after the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in New York City, which resulted in the deaths of 146 garment workers. ASSE champions workplace safety and environmental health in the United States and beyond. Brown’s presentation is free and open to the public.

Discounted Faculty/Staff Cowboy Basketball Tickets on Sale Now

A limited number of OSU Cowboy basketball season tickets are still available at the Faculty and Staff Discounted Price. The 2008-09 home schedule consists of 16 regular-season games and one remaining exhibition in historic Gallagher-Iba Arena. Discounted Faculty/Staff Season tickets start at $460 (Regular price is $575) and are available in various locations in the arena (per-seat donation may apply in certain areas). In addition to full season tickets, OSU has introduced two half-season ticket packages ($300, no per-seat donation requirement), featuring nine home games. OSU student receives national FFA recognition

The National FFA Organization named OSU senior Travis Schnaithman the 2008 American Star Farmer during a recent ceremony at the national convention in Indianapolis. After graduation from OSU, Schnaithman plans to return to the farm as a full-time production agriculturist. Click here to read more.

John Griffin named College of Education Rising Star
OSU alumnus John Griffin will receive the college’s 2008 Rising Star Award during an awards banquet on Nov. 7. Griffin, the founder and coordinator of the Cypress Fairbanks Physical Education Conference, has volunteered for the Oklahoma Muscular Dystrophy Association for 17 years as a counselor and cabin leader at the Oklahoma MDA summer camp. He earned his bachelor of science degree in physical education/health from OSU in 1999. He has 10 years of experience teaching in the public schools in Texas and Oklahoma. Griffin is currently a physical/health educator at Goodson Middle School in Cypress, Texas.

Oklahoma researchers support biodiversity in biofuels production

The environmental consequences of U.S. and European requirements for cellulose-based ethanol production are uncertain and could cause problems, according to an international group of scientists that includes researchers from Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma. The researchers agree that more study is needed on the use of plant diversity for biofuels production to better ensure the environmental and economic stability of any system. The 23-member group co-authored an article on the need for a science-based policy to address this global issue in an October issue of Science magazine.  

OSU-Tulsa’s Benefactors’ Dinner to honor donors and scholarship recipients tonight
Oklahoma State University-Tulsa will honor the benefactors who contribute private funds for scholarships as well as the students who receive them during the Benefactors’ Dinner tonight at the Helmerich Advanced Technology Research Center. Private donations to the OSU Foundation for OSU-Tulsa scholarships resulted in $116,500 in scholarship funds being awarded to 157 students this year, a 34 percent funding increase compared to last year. Guest pianist to teach and perform at OSU this weekend

Dr. James Nalley will present a piano master class on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and a solo recital performance on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 2:30 p.m. in the Seretean Center Concert Hall. Both events are free and open to the public. Nalley, a professor of piano at Florida State University, has performed across the U.S., Canada and Europe, and has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's finest orchestras. His visit is funded by the Fae Rawdon Norris Endowment for the Humanities.

Exotic Pets to be featured at community Pet Care Seminar

The OSU Center for Veterinary Health Sciences will host a Pet Care Seminar on “Health Care of Pocket Pets” Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. in McElroy Hall Auditorium at the corner of McFarland and Farm Road on the Stillwater campus. Dr. Cornelia Ketz-Riley, clinical assistant professor in exotic pets and zoological medicine, will share tips on basic care of pocket pets, such as rodents, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, hedgehogs and more.
