World renowned physicist to speak on passion for discovery
World renowned physicist and the author of the book, “A Passion for Discovery,” professor
Peter Freund of the University of Chicago, will present a lecture at OSU on the human
side of doing theoretical physics on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 3:30 p.m. in room 106 of
the Noble Research Center. He will explore the issue through stories about the interactions
between physicists and physics. The lecture is hosted by the OSU Department of Physics.

Expert to present “The Middle East: A Global Perspective”
The School of International Studies invites you to hear Dr. Muhsen Makhamreh speak on “The Middle East: A Global Perspective,” on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 3:30 p.m. in the Wes Watkins Center Exhibit Hall. Makhamreh is dean (the equivalent of our university president) of Jordan Applied University. Halloween Harmony at Hideaway on Thursday
The Friends of Music Board is hosting its annual “Halloween Harmony at the Hideaway”
from 5 – 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30. This fundraiser for the OSU Music Department
features a variety of student ensembles and soloists performing in different areas
of the restaurant, and board members will be in costume handing out treats to patrons.
A portion of the evening’s business will be donated to Friends of Music.
HES silent auction and bake sale for United Way this week
The College of Human Environmental Sciences will hold a silent auction and bake sale
in room 119 in the HES building from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. daily, Oct. 29-31. A sampling
of items up for bid includes, one night's stay in The Atherton Hotel; two nights -
Eureka Springs condo ($220 value); gift certificates; rod and reel from The Tackle
Shack; four rounds of golf at The Links of Stillwater ($120 value) and much, much
more.
Next History Club classic Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” tomorrow
The History Club’s next classic film is the Hitchcock mystery/thriller, “Rear Window,”
set for Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. in room 313 of the Classroom Building. Described
as one of Hitchcock’s best, the film stars Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. Wheelchair-bound
Stewart becomes convinced that a murder has been committed in a neighboring apartment.
The screening is free and open to the public.
OSU-Tulsa to host graduate studies fair
OSU-Tulsa will host a Graduate Studies Fair on Nov. 5 to showcase master’s and doctoral
programs to current college students or professionals who are ready to advance their
career. The fair will take place in OSU-Tulsa’s North Hall Lobby from 3 p.m. to 6
p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The fair will feature informational
sessions on preparing for graduate entrance exams, applying for graduate school, financial
aid and scholarships as well as a new federal grant program. For more information,

Seminar to develop innovative middle managers
Dr. James Pappas will offer “Developing Innovative Middle Managers” seminar, Thursday,

Lowe elected president of OKC-PRSA
The Oklahoma City Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America has elected
Derinda Lowe, APR, as its president for 2009. Lowe, coordinator of public relations,
marketing and alumni affairs for the OSU Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, has
been with the PRSA for more than 15 years. She takes over as head of the chapter in
January. The organization is dedicated to advancing the public relations profession
and has more than 20,000 professional and student members in 112 chapters nationwide.

OSU center offering free depression screenings
The OSU Center for Family Services is offering free 30-minute depression screenings
on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, Nov. 12-13 and again on Nov. 19-20 from 5-8:30

community for more than a decade and specializes in marriage and family therapy.
Wellness tip: Icing for injuries Icing many types of injuries aids the healing process. However, it is important to use ice safely. Do not leave an ice pack on an injury after the skin becomes numb. Always keep a thin cloth between the ice pack and your skin. Don't use ice on open blisters or wounds. Never fall asleep with ice on your skin. If an injury does not respond to self-treatment within 24-72 hours or is severe, see a doctor. OSU DASNR recognizes distinguished alums
The Oklahoma State University Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
has recognized three individuals with its Distinguished Agricultural Alumni Award.
They include Mike Kubicek, the executive director of the Oklahoma Peanut Commission,
Joe Neal Hampton of the Oklahoma Seed Trade Association and Oklahoma Agribusiness
Retailers Association, and the late Clem McSpadden, the “voice of rodeo” for generations

Indian Students Association is hosting “Diwali Night” this Friday and Saturday, Oct.
24 and 25, at the Seretean Center Concert Hall. The Friday show starts at 7 p.m. and

Huhnke named 2008 Sarkeys Distinguished Professor
Oklahoma State University’s Dr. Ray Huhnke has been named the 2008 recipient of the
Sarkeys Distinguished Professor Award by the OSU Division of Agricultural Sciences
and Natural Resources, based on outstanding contributions to agriculture. Huhnke serves
as director of the DASNR Biobased Products and Energy Center, which coordinates the
division’s nationally recognized bioenergy programs and serves as a liaison with the
bioenergy industry. Huhnke also serves as coordinator of the multi-college, multi-institutional
OSU Biofuels Team and is the principal or co-principal investigator on grants and

Chancellor tours Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center
The Chancellor of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Glen D. Johnson Jr. visited the FAPC during homecoming week to learn more about the services the center provides. Johnson was an early advocate of the value-added center while he led the Oklahoma House of Representatives. An economic impact study found the combined direct, indirect and induced economic contributions of FAPC client companies were $6.3 billion and generated 52,000 jobs. Professor John Bowlt of the University of Southern California will speak on “Performing

KOSU “Celebrate ’08” Fall Membership Drive starts this week
KOSU is seeking pledges from at least 625 members during its fall on-air membership
drive beginning Thursday, Oct. 23. The eight-day KOSU “Celebrate ‘08” fundraiser will

OSU employee quoted in new book on podcasting
Lanie James, employee development coordinator for OSU’s Career Services, is quoted
in the latest edition (2nd edition) of “Podcasting for Dummies.” She talks about using
podcasting as a way to offer interview and resume tips for soon-to-be OSU grads. Her
comments appear in a section that explains the importance of planning out a podcast
to achieve a specific goal or purpose. James recently completed her master’s degree
in the School of Journalism and Broadcasting, completing her professional project
on the podcast series she developed for Career Services.

Two restaurants in Stillwater will donate 10 percent of their sales to United Way
if you’ll tell your waiter that’s what you want when you order your meal on the designated

10 p.m. and El Chico will donate 10 percent of sales on Tuesday, Oct. 28, from 5 –

Free practice test on campus hosted by Kaplan Test Prep
Kaplan will be offering a campus-wide opportunity for students to take a free practice
GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, OAT or PCAT administered under simulated testing conditions

Cowboy basketball tops Big 12 for graduation success rate
The National Collegiate Athletic Association’s latest graduation success rates puts the OSU men’s basketball team on top with a score of 92 percent, the highest in the Big 12 Conference. The rates are based on incoming freshmen from 1998 to 2001 graduating within six years. Nebraska is second with 77 percent.KOSU to offer “The Legal Lowdown”
KOSU is launching a new two minute weekly radio program “The Legal Lowdown” with
attorney and OSU alumna Stacy Acord. Acord graduated from OSU in 1996 with a degree in journalism and worked at KOSU and
KWTV in Oklahoma City before earning her law degree from the University of Oklahoma.
“The Legal Lowdown” will air Fridays at 9:30 a.m. during The Takeaway on KOSU.
Bengali Film Festival starts tonight
The Bangladesh Students Association is hosting the Bengali Film Festival Oct. 16 – 18 in room 106 of the Noble Research Center, starting at 6 p.m. nightly. These are critically acclaimed, award-winning films that present life as it is in Bangladesh. Admission is free. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, join the fight
Next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Share The WEALTH will have an educational breast
cancer awareness booth at the Student Union across from the bookstore from 10 a.m.
– 2 p.m. each day. OSU students will be giving out a variety of information and goodies.
Wednesday is “Think Pink” day and everyone is being asked to wear pink in support
of breast cancer awareness. Share The WEALTH is also collecting pink Yoplait lids.
For every pink lid OSU sends in Yoplait® will donate 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for
the Cure®, up to $1.5 million. Bring lids to the booth or to Room 154 of University

Sustainability Speaker Series: “Innovation in Policy”
Dr. Beth Caniglia will present “Innovation in Policy” as part of the Sustainability

Dr. Dianne Dorland, dean of the College of Engineering at Rowan University, will
present the 42nd Lecture in Chemical Engineering Education. The lectures on Thursday

both industry and academia, will review learning concepts and their practical implementation.

OSU Theatre Presents “Endgame”
The OSU Department of Theatre investigates this question “Is there a purpose to life?”
in its upcoming production of “Endgame,” from Oct. 21 - 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 26
at 2:30 p.m. in the Jerry L. Davis Studio Theatre in Gundersen Hall. Admission is
$5. A post-show discussion will follow the Oct. 24 performance. Endgame shows a day

Canned food drive to start Monday
Students In Free Enterprise and Phi Beta Sigma are conducting a canned food drive
called “Hunger No More.” The drive will conclude with the annual Stroll Off in the
OSU Theater. Three canned food items will allow spectators in for a discounted price.
Volunteers are needed for the food drive Oct. 20 – Nov. 17. For more information,

OSU’s tobacco policy part of OETA documentary airing tonight
Hromas, Dorr and CEPD to receive regional outreach honors
The OSU Center for Executive and Professional Development and two faculty members
will receive awards from the University Continuing Education Association Regional
Conference in Kansas City next week. Dr. James G. Hromas, associate professor of marketing
and director of OSU International Education and Outreach and the OSU School of International
Studies, will receive an award for leadership. Dr. Patrick B. Dorr, OSU Haskell Cudd
professor of accounting in the Spears School of Business, will receive a teaching
award. The CEPD itself will be honored for its 2008 OSU Energy Conference with the

Fight Back Express coming to OSU
OSU Provost and Senior Vice President Marlene Strathe, Stillwater Mayor Roger McMillian,
Pistol Pete, and Hero of Hope Dan Stake will be among those on hand when the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s Fight Back Express bus comes
to Stillwater Monday, Oct. 13, at 4:30 p.m. north of Theta Pond. The Fight Back Express
was launched on May 4 in Ohio and is traveling more than 25,000 miles across the nation

Public input sought for proposed sensory gardens
The OSU Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and OSU Botanical Garden
are hosting a public hearing to propose the implementation of sensory gardens to provide
a wide variety of horticultural experiences that will stimulate all five senses. Generous
funding for the project is being provided by the Oklahoma Developmental Disability
Council. Interested individuals are invited to attend the hearing on Tuesday, Oct.

KOSU airing rural issues series in advance of presidential election
KOSU is participating in the “Rural Issues Project” as part of its commitment to
voter education this election season. The project is a cooperative effort between
KOSU and nine other public radio stations in the region to report on issues in the
presidential election that uniquely affect rural America. The series is available
at www.kosu.org. Other segments will continue each Tuesday and Thursday at 7:04 a.m. up to the election.

5K “Run for Rabies” set for Saturday
OSU’s American Veterinary Medical Association student chapter will host a 5K “Run
for Rabies” around Boomer Lake on Saturday, Oct. 11, starting at 8 a.m. All proceeds
from the run will be donated to the non-profit organization “Alliance for Rabies Control”.
Registration is $20 and includes a T-shirt and light breakfast. Runners are encouraged
to run with their dogs, but must bring proof of their dog’s current vaccinations.

Leadership League invites participation in “Take the Walk” project
Leadership League at OSU is hosting a one-mile 'bare foot' walk in conjunction with
the “Take the Walk” campaign to raise awareness and money for to fight AIDS/HIV and
poverty in Africa. Walkers will meet at the OSU Library fountain Tuesday, Oct. 21, the walk starts at 12:30 p.m. The “Take The
Walk” campaign will donate $1 for each person that participates in the walk. The funds

“Memory of Water” starts tonight
Can memory be subjective? The OSU Department of Theatre explores the question in
its production of Shelagh Stephenson’s “The Memory of Water,” starting tonight (Tuesday,
Sept. 30) through Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. nightly and Oct. 5 at 2:30 p.m. in the Vivia
Locke Theatre at the Seretean Center for Performing Arts. A post-show discussion will

“Pokes Vote” to include voter registration tonight – bring a canned food item
The OSU Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature, OSU Student Government Association and the Young Democrats and College Republicans will be hosting a political fair on OSU Library lawn starting at 5 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, Sept. 30) in Stillwater. The OSU Alumni Association presents the first event of America's Greatest Homecoming
Celebration Oct. 3-5—Football Frenzy—a weekend-long flag football tournament. The

Two tickets will be auctioned off on eBay this week that will give the winners the
royal treatment at Orange Peel—spending the concert in McCollom's recliners, served
by personal waiters throughout the concert. Just go to eBay, search "Best seat in
the house at orange peel" and start bidding. All money goes to the United Way Campaign
“Live United.” OSU students are trying to raise $25,000 by November 25 for this campaign
that helps 25 non-profit organizations in Stillwater.
