OSU to host American Cancer Society presentation
Tuesday, March 25, 2008
(STILLWATER, OKLA. -- March 24, 2008) Oklahoma State University Women’s Programs and
the Seretean Wellness Center will host a cancer awareness program March 27 as part
of Women’s History Month.
Sue Ellis, manager of community health initiatives for the American Cancer Society,
will speak at 2 p.m. in 408 Student Union on OSU’s Stillwater campus. The presentation,
“Prevention, Detection and Services,” is open to the public.
Following both her parents’ deaths due to tobacco use, Ellis was inspired to begin
serving as an American Cancer Society volunteer in 1998. She joined the society five
years later on a full-time basis to support its greater mission of improving the lives
of all Oklahomans.
As a community manager, Ellis overseas health initiatives for Oklahoma, Payne, Lincoln
and Logan Counties. Her outreach endeavors include prevention through education, early
detection through screening guidelines and promotion of individual, pro-active healthy
lifestyles.
“Sue feels confident that cancer can be conquered,” said Gloria Birdine, coordinator
of OSU Women’s Programs. “Her mission and message suggest that through research, education,
advocacy and service, lives can be saved and suffering diminished for those who have
cancer.”
