To OSU Students, Faculty, Staff:
 
Once again our nation is saddened and shocked by needless tragedy on a university campus. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those associated with Northern Illinois University. An event such as this is impossible to understand and explain.
 
I want to take this opportunity to remind you that the security and safety of everyone on our campus is an ongoing priority. 
 
Since the Virginia Tech tragedy last year, we have evaluated all our emergency procedures, participated in various training opportunities and taken steps to improve our ability to respond to an emergency situation on our campus. I will be meeting with our emergency response team this afternoon to assess our plans.
 
Communications in an emergency is critical and we have added a voice and text alert system that will allow us to reach cell phones in the event of an emergency. If you have not signed up to receive emergency alerts I strongly urge you to do so at emergencyalert
 
As we extend our thoughts to the Northern Illinois University community, I want you to know that we will continue to do everything we can to make our campus as safe as possible.
