Regents approve additional admission options for OSU
Friday, January 18, 2008
(Okmulgee, OK – January 18, 2008) The OSU/A&M Board of Regents approved a new admissions
application review process today. If approved by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher
Education, the new process would allow students who meet the state regents’ requirements
for admission to be considered through additional criteria by Oklahoma State University.
“While we have no intention of lowering our admission standards, we don’t want to
discourage students with potential for academic success from entering our application
process,” said OSU Interim President Marlene Strathe.
“Broadening the admission process will allow the university to provide a more balanced
review of our incoming freshman class and remain true to our land-grant mission,”
said Albert Colom, OSU vice president for enrollment management.
Colom continued, “It is important that OSU as a public institution not overlook qualified
applicants based solely on one set of standards, but rather review applicants based
on a combination of their school and testing performance as well as their leadership,
experiences, and interests.”
Under the proposal, first-time incoming freshmen who meet the admissions standards
for a comprehensive university established by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher
Education would be encouraged to apply with the review process in mind.
Student applicants would then enter a review process for assessment beyond cognitive
skills (GPA and ACT/SAT, class rank, quality and rigor of coursework) which would
also take into account other factors like realistic self-appraisal, long-term goals,
and leadership experience.
The proposal must now go before the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education for
final approval. If approved, the new review process would begin for Fall 2008.
Current OSU Admission Standards
