President’s Leadership Council celebrates 43rd anniversary

More than 80 alumni of the Oklahoma State University President’s Leadership Council program, including OSU President Burns Hargis, will be in Stillwater Saturday to mark the council’s 43rd anniversary. The reception is set for 3 p.m. at the Starlight Terrace on the fourth floor of the Student Union. Hargis, who was in the first class of PLC students when it was formed by former OSU President Robert B. Kamm in 1966, is expected to drop by and greet the guests. Returning alumni will learn about a new Center for Ethics and Creative Leadership at OSU, hear plans for the major renovation of the Student Union, and get the latest on the PLC Scholarship Endowment Program.

Political fair to include voter registration – bring a canned food item
The OSU Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature, OSU Student Government Association and the Young Democrats and College Republicans will be hosting a political fair on library lawn Tuesday, Sept. 30. There will be representatives from state and local parties, a voter registration booth, candidates, political student group booths, an issues forum, and a canned food drive. The goal of the event is to educate students on the political campaigns and also register at least 2,000 new voters. Admission to the event will be one canned food item.

Psi Chi sponsoring a free workshop for pre-health and pre-med majors
The Oklahoma State University Chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology, is sponsoring a workshop to provide tips for students who are pre-health/pre-med majors on Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 4:30 – 6 p.m., in room 112 in the Classroom Building. The workshop will include guest speakers Dr. Melanie Page, OSU psychology professor, and Jacqueline Guidry, senior Psi Chi member, who wrote a guide for pre-health/pre-med majors under the guidance of Page. Attention benefits-eligible OSU employees
Watch campus mail for your 2009 Dental and Vision Plan Options Guide. Online enrollment will be from Wednesday, Oct. 1, through Friday, Oct. 24.  Enrollment will be online using Web for Employees. During this time, you will be able to make changes to your dental and vision coverage that will be effective Jan. 1, 2009.  If you do not wish to make changes to your dental or vision coverage, you do not need to do anything. A separate annual benefit enrollment period for other benefit plans will run from Monday, Nov. 3, through Wednesday, Dec. 3. Would you like to recycle paper conveniently on OSU's campus?

Thanks to the Student Government Association Sustainability Committee, now you can recycle paper at a location close by. Just take you waste paper to the large green and yellow paper retriever bins at one of the following locations on campus:  the parking lot on the east end of the Classroom Building, the parking lot between Kerr-Drummond and Ag Hall near Farm Road, the Villages living community near Village E, the west side of Stout Hall on Stout Lane, and the North Monroe living community. Mixed paper waste that can go into the paper retriever bins includes magazines, catalogues, newspaper, computer paper, notebook paper, junk mail, and colored paper. No phone books or cardboard is allowed in the retriever bins.

International Student Night at Cowgirl Soccer game (Cowgirls are 8-0!)
International Student Organization and Student Government Association will be hosting a free tailgate prior to the OSU vs. Texas Tech Soccer match this Friday. The tailgate, which will include free hotdogs and sodas, is set to start at 6 p.m., game time is at 7 p.m. OSU Athletics invites all international students to represent their homeland: bring related flags, signs, or traditional wardrobe to the game and be recognized at halftime. Admission to the soccer game is free with a student I.D.

OSU-Tulsa Career Fair set for Tuesday

OSU-Tulsa will hold its largest career fair yet with over 50 companies on Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 2  - 4 p.m. at the Main Hall Commons. OSUIT to host career encounters
OSU Institute of Technology will host the 2nd Annual “Career Encounters of the Orange Kind” on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Okmulgee campus. “Career Encounters” will present hands-on demonstrations of technologies that are taught at the university. Information on admissions, financial aid and on-campus housing will also be presented. The event is for high school seniors and adult learners who want to know more about the programs offered at the university and the prospects for high-paying careers after graduation. OSU students preparing packets for Hurricane Ike victims

Phi Mu sorority is coordinating an effort among Oklahoma State University students to prepare 80,000 packets of personal toiletries for the victims of Hurricane Ike. Students began producing the packets yesterday (Wednesday, Sept. 17) in the Central Dining Services building shortly after a 40-foot trailer carrying 18 pallets of toothbrushes, combs, brushes and other necessities arrived. In addition, 85 cases of shampoo will be added to complete the gender specific packets for those who felt the effects of Hurricane Ike last week. Travel abroad photo contest deadline Friday
The 12th annual Study Abroad Travel Photo Contest deadline is this Friday, Sept. 19. Students may submit two photos for the contest that showcase their travels between Aug. 1, 2007 and July 31, 2008. Photos will be judged in both the domestic and international categories. The OSU community will have its opportunity to pick a "People's Choice" winner at the Study Abroad Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium. OSU participating in NCAA certification program
Oklahoma State University has begun a year-long, campus-wide study of its athletic program as part of the NCAA’s regular certification process. The self-study will focus on the areas of academic integrity, governance and commitment to rules compliance, as well as a commitment to gender and diversity and student-athlete well-being. “Academic accreditation is common for colleges and universities,” said OSU Provost and Senior Vice President Marlene Strathe. “NCAA certification focuses solely on a university’s athletic programs and we welcome this opportunity to study our programs in depth.” This will be the third self-study for OSU.

Reintegration briefings set for families, employers, educators and friends of Oklahoma service members
The Inter-Service Family Assistance Committee will hold a meeting this Saturday, Sept. 20, at a local church in Stillwater to offer briefings that will assist families, employers, and educators who want to help military service members make a successful transition back into their community and everyday life as they return from deployment. The Bus Roadeo is this weekend

OSU Parking and Transit Services is hosting The Bus Roadeo, an event that showcases the transit driving skills of celebrity drivers and OSU transit operators, on Saturday, Sept. 20, in OSU parking lot #74 on Hall of Fame across from the Colvin Recreational Center. Celebrity drivers will include OSU wrestling coach John Smith, members of the Stillwater City Council, the O’Colly’s editor-in-chief, SGA VP and others who will take on the course from 10 a.m. to noon. The OSU transit operators will compete against each other from 1 – 3 p.m. The winner among the transit operators will go on to compete in the state Roadeo in Oklahoma City. Moms of tots needed

Volunteer mothers are needed for moms and tots study at Oklahoma State University. Get paid $60 to tell researchers how you handle your toddler's misbehaviors. Scholastic book fair next week
The Early Childhood Education Club is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair next week (Sept. 22-26) from 8-5 each day in the Skywalk (2nd floor) at the College of Human Environmental Sciences. It will remain open late, until 5:30 p.m., on Thursday the 25th. Baked goods from the Red Rock Bakery will also be on sale Tuesday through Friday (23-26).

All-Steinway recital set for Sunday

The OSU Department of Music will officially recognize its status as one of only 90 All-Steinway schools in the world and the only All-Steinway music program at a public university in Oklahoma with a recital on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 2:30 p.m. in the Seretean Center Concert Hall. The recital will feature the entire OSU piano faculty plus other instrumental and vocal faculty members. Sally Coveleskie, national director of institutional sales at Steinway & Sons, will travel from New York to speak on behalf of the company, and will present the Department with a plaque commemorating the occasion. This event is free and open to the public.

OSU emeritus professor covers Hollywood’s treatment of wars – book signing tonight
Peter C. Rollins, OSU emeritus professor, will be signing copies of his book, “Why We Fought: America’s Wars as Film and History,” on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Hastings Bookstore in Stillwater after working hours. Nader to address issues at OSU-Tulsa

Professor to explore struggles and triumphs of Muslim women in America

OSU professor Dr. Najwa Raouda will explore the struggles and triumphs of Muslim women in America and discuss the similarities between the two cultures during a presentation on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. in North Hall 140 in Tulsa. Defense training offered next week
T.A.K.E. Defense Training, an event that helps teach women of all ages that they have the right to feel safe wherever they go, will be held at Oklahoma State University on Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 7-9 p.m. in the Wes Watkins Center, room 112. Exclusively for women ages 12 and up, participants will take part in hands-on, self-defense training to give them the knowledge, confidence and empowerment to take control in any situation. Texas Roadhouse sets fundraiser for injured OSU student
The Texas Roadhouse will hold a fundraiser to help with medical bills for OSU student Stephen Sellers who was injured in a car accident over Labor Day weekend. Wellness tip: Good vs. bad pain during exercise    
While you are exercising, your muscles may get tight, sore or even painful. Some types of pain are okay, others bad. "Good pain" usually occurs evenly on both sides of the body. Dr. Mann named distinguished alumni, reception this weekend

Oklahoma State University’s American Indian Alumni Association has chosen Dr. Henrietta Mann, class of 1970, as its Distinguished Alumna for 2008. Mann, Southern Cheyenne, is currently serving as the president of the Cheyenne Arapaho Tribal College in Weatherford. Hamilton elected to national board of mammalogists
Dr. Meredith Hamilton has been elected to the board of directors of the American Society of Mammalogist, the world’s oldest and largest scientific organization devoted to mammals. Hamilton, OSU associate professor of zoology will serve a three-year term assisting in the directing and policy-making for the 4,500-member organization. She has been a member of ASM for 32 years.

OSU wins gold at CASE Awards
Oklahoma State University photographer Phil Shockley took home the gold in the individual photographs category during the 2008 Circle of Excellence Awards held by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. A panel of independent judges select the honorees from more than 3,500 annual entries in 41 categories. The selection recognizes professional commitment to institutional advancement and indentifies models of best practice. Lisa Frein, communications specialist with the Oklahoma State University Foundation, was also named a winner of CASE’s Virginia Carter Smith Scholarship program.

Technology Business Assessment Group announces fall 2008 request for proposals
The Technology Business Assessment Group announces the fall 2008 request for proposals for research projects in need of feasibility demonstration, and/or prototype development for commercialization purposes. Former Oklahoma Congressman to speak on national security and rule of law

The OSU Library will host former Oklahoma Congressman and foreign affairs expert Mickey Edwards for a talk titled “National Security and the Rule of Law,” at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room. Edwards, who held his position in Congress for Oklahoma’s 5th district for 16 years, currently lectures at Princeton, writes weekly columns in the Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe and Los Angeles Times, and is a host of a weekly political commentary broadcast on National Public Radio. The event is free and open to the public.

OSU grad and dog win big in reality TV series
Oklahoma State University graduate Travis Brorsen took home the $250,000 top prize and his dog Presley won the title of “Greatest American Dog,” which is a CBS reality series. Brorsen, a Perry native and an actor in Los Angeles, and Presley his 16-month old boxer, were the underdog winners of the 10 weeks of competition designed to develop a bond between owner and dog. Business Week to start Monday

OSU’s Business Student Council will serve up a variety of food, facts and fun Sept. 15-19 to celebrate Business Week 2008. Business Week is an annual five-day event sponsored by BSC to showcase the Spears School of Business. The celebration features activities and events designed to educate OSU students about the opportunities the Spears School offers and helps prepare them for life after college. Stokes Alliance to hold annual research symposium next weekend
The Oklahoma Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics will host its 14th Annual Research Symposium on Saturday, Sept. 20, in the Noble Research Center. There will be poster and oral presentations given by OK-LSAMP Scholars as well as invited Scholars from other programs, seminars on research ethics and keynote speakers. Popular show to return to the air

SUNUP, the television show that helped Oklahoma agricultural producers start their day off right for two decades, returns to OETA this fall with a new look, a new crew and a renewed purpose. The news magazine format program debuts Saturday, Oct. 4, and will include the latest in market analysis and feature stories on the multiple facets of agriculture and natural resources. Clinton Griffiths, an Oklahoma State alumnus in agricultural communications, will serve as host of the show. SUNUP will air at 7:30 a.m. each Saturday on OETA channels throughout the state. OSU gets grant for unique intervention program

OSU is one of the recipients for a $436,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health for a two-year project titled “A Clinic-Based Interdisciplinary Intervention for Parents of Children Newly Diagnosed with Cancer.”, The grant will support personnel from the OSU Psychology Department, the College of Nursing at OUHSC, and faculty in the Jimmy Everest Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in Oklahoma City. This project is headed by Dr. Larry L. Mullins, OSU professor of psychology.

OSU zoology professor receives national honor
Donald French, OSU professor of zoology, is the recipient of the National Association of Biology Teacher’s Four-Year College Biology Research/ Teaching Award for 2008. This award, sponsored by Leica Microsystems, honors French for his contribution to research in teaching biology at the college level and recognizes “work in the area of practical teaching applications…rather than theoretical issues.” French’s work focuses on teaching innovations in introductory biology, a course he has coordinated since 1992. OSU receives two wetland grants
Joe Bidwell, associate professor in the Department of Zoology, and Craig Davis, associate professor in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, recently received major wetlands-related grants totaling more than $500,000. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency approved a $317,000 grant for a project that will focus on wetland mapping and classification of wetland resources in southeastern Oklahoma. A second EPA grant of $260,000 will focus on assessment of the condition of oxbow lakes in Oklahoma. For more information, contact Loren Smith 744-5555.

U.N. Symphony conductor to make presentation
The conductor of the Symphony of the United Nations, Maestro Joseph Eger, will speak on his work combining music, physics and social change on Monday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. in the Seretean Center Concert Hall in Stillwater.. College of Education to host “Teaching about the Holocaust” workshop

The Oklahoma State University College of Education, in cooperation with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., will host a workshop titled “Teaching about the Holocaust,” on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Willard Hall, room 010. The workshop is open to all educators and anyone who is interested in learning more about the holocaust. State health board urges tobacco-free campuses and recognizes OSU The Oklahoma State Board of Health is encouraging all universities, colleges and career tech centers in Oklahoma to adopt tobacco-free campus policies. The board has also adopted a resolution recognizing OSU for implementing the first tobacco-free campus policy in the Big 12 Conference. Dr. Lee Bird, vice president for Student Affairs at OSU, and Robin Purdie, director of the OSU Seretean Wellness Center, recently received the resolution on behalf of OSU President Burns Hargis.

The Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences will honor four recipients at this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award Luncheon on Friday, Oct. 31, as the college celebrates its 60th anniversary. The recipients are Drs. George “Pat” Mayer, class of 1954 posthumously, John King and Louie Stratton, class of 1955, and Charles Montgomery, class of 1963. OSU Symphony Orchestra announces first concert of the season
The Oklahoma State University Symphony Orchestra will perform its first concert of the season on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 8 p.m. in the Seretean Center Concert Hall.
