(October 21, 2008 Stillwater, OK) – The Oklahoma State University Institute for Teaching and Learning Excellence has awarded Goutam Chakraborty, professor of marketing in the Spears School of Business, the Wendell H. Bailey Faculty Excellence Award. He received the award at the ITLE National Advisory Board Meeting in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 16.

“I am delighted and surprised to receive this award,” Chakraborty said. “I know there are many outstanding teachers at OSU and I am lucky the committee chose me. I feel very honored.”

The award was created to recognize an outstanding OSU faculty member who has made a significant impact on the teaching and learning process through using a variety of educational resources. Faculty members are nominated by fellow faculty members, students or staff, and are chosen based on teaching excellence. Chakraborty received a cash award of $4,000 and a distinctive plaque in addition to his expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. He also addressed the ITLE national board members while there about the opportunities and challenges of teaching quantitative courses to distance learning students.

“Goutam is an outstanding educator,” said Josh Wiener, professor and head of OSU’s department of marketing. “He excels at all levels, and his students continually rate his class as the best and most valuable class they have taken.”

This faculty excellence award is presented in memory of Wendell H. Bailey, an Institute for Teaching & Learning Excellence national advisory board member who lost his battle with cancer on Sept. 26, 2006. Bailey was a well-known presence in cable technology circles. A graduate of the University of Maryland, he had been a chief technologist for advanced broadband technology at NBC. He was the author of more than 100 technical papers on cable technology and policy. Bailey served on the ITLE National Advisory Board for more than 10 years.

Chakraborty has won many other teaching awards including the 2003 and 2008 Professor of the Year Awards at the Consortium Institute of Management and Business Analysis, Regents Distinguished Teaching Award at OSU, Outstanding Direct Marketing Educator Award given by the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation in New York, and the Great Executive MBA Instructor Award at the University of Iowa. He also has won the Outstanding Marketing Teacher Award given by the Academy of Marketing Science in Coral Gables, Fla.

Chakraborty received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, a post graduate certificate in general management from Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta, and his master’s degree in statistics and doctorate in marketing from the University of Iowa. He joined OSU in 1991 as an assistant professor of marketing, teaching quantitative marketing courses.

His research has been published in the Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Advertising, and the Journal of Business Research. He co-authored the book Contemporary Database Marketing.

In addition, Chakraborty has served on the editorial review board of Journal of Business Research and Journal of Academy of Marketing Science. He has chaired the national conference for direct marketing educators for 2004 and 2005 and co-chaired the M2007 data mining conference. He also is the founder of SAS/OSU data mining certificate program.
