(August 28, 2008 Stillwater, OK) - Students were already lined up in front of the
Study Abroad Office doors at 7:15 on August 27, 2008, the opening date of the application
cycle for the Provost’s Study Abroad Office Scholarship for winter inter-session,
spring semester, and spring break 2008 study abroad. The scholarships are given
out on a first-come-first-served basis. Students were applying for a winter inter-session
trip to Thailand; numerous reciprocal exchange sites such as the Slovenia, the Czech
Republic, Malta and the UK; and affiliated/approved programs to Spain. Twenty- four
$750 scholarships were available for spring semester, with seven $500 available for
each of the shorter term programs in winter inter-session and spring break. Twenty-five
scholarships were given out by 9:00, three for the winter program and twenty-two for
spring semester. Of the twenty-five applicants, twenty were women and five were men.
Scholarships are still available and students continue to submit their applications
through the fall semester. A waiting list will be established if necessary.
Along with the application, students must submit proof of application to a credit
bearing activity abroad, a service statement indicating how they will promote study
abroad upon their return to OSU, and a statement of financial need. The purpose of
the PSAO scholarship is to provide an incentive for students to gain experience abroad
that will further develop their global competency. The Provost’s office allocates
$120,000 annually for the scholarships . Two hundred six scholarships were given
out in 2007-2008.
