An aviation management senior from Walters has recently been named Oklahoma State University’s representative to the George & Donna Nigh Public Service Leadership Academy. Mitchell Sims, son of Curtis and Suzanne Sims, earned this honor because of his high academic achievement and community involvement.

Each school across the state selects one participant for the Leadership Academy. Sims will join the other participants the first weekend of February to attend a five-day program in Oklahoma City. At the conference, Sims will enjoy personal contacts with the state’s business leadership, governmental leaders and academic community.

“I think this program helps keep Oklahomans in Oklahoma,” said Sims. “I think I will make connections with good leaders from around the state. We will come together to brainstorm about the future of Oklahoma.”

Sims is a leader in many campus and community organizations and holds a private pilot certification. Sims also spends much of his time as a dedicated AmeriCorps member. Through this, he has participated in Oklahoma Money Matters, which has led Sims around the state to speak to citizens about personal finance, consumer credit, banking, retirement and student financial aid.

“His passion for good financial management practices is supported by a strong work ethic,” said Joyce Montgomery, a site supervisor for Oklahoma Money Matters. “Mitchell likes to get things done and has accomplished much for the community while maintaining an above-average academic record.”

Montgomery believes Sims has much to contribute to the Leadership Academy.
"Mitchell Sims enjoys the art of learning, and is willing to give of his time and talents to help others. He is dependable and exhibits maturity and confidence. Mitchell is a good role model for his peers and is well-liked by those who meet him."
