Census Workshop at the OSU Library

Monday, April 27, 2009

Learn to access census data effectively

(April 10, 2009   Stillwater, Okla.) – When the federal government collects census data in 2010, it will mark the first time since 2000 that this information has been gathered.

Two Census workshops hosted by the OSU Library on April 30 will teach participants new tools available to access this updated information when it becomes available, as well as explaining existing tools which can be used to analyze the current census data.

“These workshops are instrumental to groups such as chambers of commerce, and will be useful to faculty, staff and students on campus,” Documents Librarian Suzanne Holcombe said.

The first workshop, “Get Ready for the 2010 Census," will show how to access the new "multiyear estimates" data from the American Community Survey, 2000 Census data, 2007 Economic Census data and more from the Census homepage. The workshop will focus on learning to use the American Fact Finder search engine to access 2010 Census data.

The second workshop, “Using the Census for Economic Development,” will show how to use online Census tools known as "Local Employment Dynamics" for economic development. The workshop will focus on data and maps that feature Oklahoma and bordering states.

“Get Ready for the 2010 Census” begins at 9:30 a.m. and continues until 12:30 p.m. “Using the Census for Economic Development” follows from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

The workshops are free and open to the public. They are held in room 206 of the Edmon Low Library. To make reservations, contact Suzanne Holcombe at suzanne.holcombe@okstate.edu . The OSU Library, Oklahoma Department of Commerce and Oklahoma Department of Libraries are cosponsoring.
