The National Society of Black Engineers recognized five Oklahoma State University students with scholar awards for the 2008-2009 school year at the organization’s national convention held in Las Vegas, Nev., last month.

The students were recognized at NSBE’s 12th Annual Golden Torch Awards for exemplifying the organization’s ideals of academic excellence, professional success and dedication to improvement of the black community.

Terrell Grayson, a chemical engineering junior from Oklahoma City, received the NSBE ExxonMobil National Scholar award; Cameron Gaddy, a civil engineering junior from Stillwater, received the NSBE ExxonMobil Regional Scholar award; Dejanae Berry, an industrial engineering and management freshman from Oklahoma City, received the NSBE Fellows Scholar award; Gabrielle Brown, an industrial engineering and management freshman from Oklahoma City, received the NSBE Fellows Scholar award; and Darryl Wells, a mechanical and aerospace engineering sophomore from St. Louis, received a  NSBE Fulfilling the Legacy Scholar award.

“Oklahoma State University is very pleased to see that the scholastic dedication, desire and hard work that these students have demonstrated resulted in such prestigious nationally recognized awards,” said Dr. Jason Kirksey, interim associate Vice President for Diversity at OSU. “These students are a wonderful illustration of the value of OSU being a welcoming and inclusive institution, and we commend them.”

Kirksey also congratulated the students’ adviser Travis Griffin, the Multicultural Engineering Programs coordinator, for his efforts and encouraged the group to “continue upon the path that they have set for themselves and others to follow.”

The mission of NSBE is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. NSBE is the largest student-run organization in the country with over 31,000 collegiate, pre-collegiate, alumni, and lifetime members all over the globe.
