Hromas receives national award for excellence in continuing education service

(April 20, 2009   Stillwater, OK) –James Hromas, Oklahoma State University director of international education and outreach and director of the School of International Studies (SIS), has received the University Continuing Education Association’s (UCEA) 2008 Walter S. Bittner Award for Outstanding Service. Hromas is a driving force for OSU educational outreach and has been a catalyst for change locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

“It is a great honor to receive this award,” Hromas said.  “I have enjoyed working on Association board business and committee work and the fellowship with and valuable information gained from the members.”

The award highlights Hromas’ dedication to outreach in higher education.  He has consistently been involved in UCEA outreach and encouraged others to be involved, as well. He has given numerous presentations and attended various outreach seminars and conferences. Hromas also has provided leadership through participation at executive levels for conferences and planning committees.

Hromas recently completed 40 years of service to OSU and in addition to his role in SIS, he is an associate professor of marketing in the Spears School of Business.

Hromas first became involved in outreach as a graduate assistant and later became director of Business Extension at OSU from 1970 to 1991.  Between 1991 and 2004, Hromas was appointed to many other positions including director of University Extension in 1991, dean of University Extension in 1994, dean of University Extension International and Economic Development in 1997, director of SIS in 1998, and director of International Education and Outreach (IE&O) in 2004.

IE&O provides leadership in internationalizing the OSU campus. IE&O also provides support to the Fulbright program, Phi Beta Delta and the Peace Corps regional office. SIS includes the Master of Science in international studies degree program, study abroad, the English Language Institute, the International Outreach Unit and the Mexico liaison offices.  

UCEA’s members include public and private accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities, international universities, and nonprofit organizations with a significant commitment to professional and continuing higher education.  The UCEA seeks to exemplify and celebrate its commitment to fairness and diversity in all of its forums.
