New Additions Bolster OSU Journalism Faculty

Friday, October 2, 2009

(STILLWATER, Okla., Oct. 2, 2009) – Oklahoma State University students are drawing from the experience and knowledge of two distinguished journalists who joined the OSU faculty this semester, Russell Carollo and Wayne Wanta.

Carollo serves as editor in residence in the OSU School of Journalism. He won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 1998 and was selected as a finalist in 1992, 1993 and 2002. Over the course of his career, he won six awards from Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc., an organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative journalism. He also served as a Journalism Fellow at the University of Michigan. In 2009, he was inducted into the Louisiana State University School of Journalism Hall of Fame.

Wanta earned a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Texas. He served as a professor at University of Missouri’s School of Journalism and the executive director of the Center for the Digital Globe, a program blending journalism, law, business and human environmental sciences. He also is a past president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Wanta joined OSU as the Welch-Bridgewater Endowed Chair in Sports Journalism, a faculty position established this summer through a donation from Tulsa residents Bill and Peggy Welch, a 1973 journalism alumna. “The position is a great fit for me, since I've always been a sportswriter and fan,” Wanta said. “OSU is full of avid sports fans who support their teams and there are a lot of opportunities here.”

“I am delighted to welcome Professors Carollo and Wanta to the OSU School of Journalism,” said Derina Holtzhausen, professor and director of the OSU School of Journalism and Broadcasting. “Their experiences as journalists uniquely qualify them to take our program to the next level.”

The OSU School of Journalism and Broadcasting is one of 24 departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. To learn more visit cas.okstate.edu .
