OSU Education Graduates Leading in State's Teacher Shortage Employment Incentive Program
Thursday, July 30, 2009
(July 7, 2009 Stillwater, OK) – Oklahoma State University prepared more than half
of this year’s math and science teachers who received $13,602 after fulfilling requirements
of Oklahoma’s Teacher Shortage Employment Incentive Program (TSEIP).
“The OSU College of Education is pleased to help meet the state’s need for well-prepared
mathematics and science teachers. We are proud of the strong participation of OSU
students in this important program,” College of Education Dean Pamela Fry said.
The legislative program, sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education,
reimburses eligible student loan expenses or pays an equivalent cash benefit to individuals
who graduate from an Oklahoma accredited teacher education program, receive a teaching
certification in mathematics or science, and agree to teach in an Oklahoma public
secondary school for at least five years.
Of the 21 teachers completing five years of service, 12 graduated from OSU. Three
institutions had two graduates participating and three others had one. Since the
inception of the program in 2001, 119 OSU students have enrolled.
“I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to get my education from OSU,” said
Jill (Ireland) Bloyd, a 2004 math education graduate, who recently received the incentive
check. “The College of Education prepared me very well for many situations I have
faced in my first five years of teaching. I am also very thankful that I signed up
for the TSEIP program, and I would strongly encourage any student who plans to teach
science or math in Oklahoma to sign up.”
