OSU guest lecturer to take philosophical look at Darwin

(Sept. 14, 2009, STILLWATER, Okla.) – Elliott Sober, a prominent philosopher and critic
of the theory of intelligent design, will deliver a lecture commemorating the bicentennial
of Charles Darwin’s birth at 4 p.m. on Sept. 24 in Room 101 of Ag Hall at Oklahoma
State University.
Sober’s lecture is titled “Darwin and Intelligent Design” and will mark the 150th
anniversary of On The Origins of the Species, which is considered to be an influential
work of scientific literature that is the foundation of evolutionary biology.
“Dr. Sober’s work reflects his careful engagement with biology and has influenced
the development of that field,” said Angela Potochnik, an assistant professor in the
philosophy department. “It is a great honor for the College of Arts and Sciences to
host him. He is a renowned philosopher with a distinguished career working on many
topics in philosophy of biology and philosophy of science.”
Sober is the Hans Reichenbach Professor and William F. Vilas Research Professor at
the University of Wisconsin - Madison. In 2008, Cambridge University Press published
Sober’s most recent book Evidence and Evolution – The Logic Behind the Science. He
was a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science,
and was a Harvard Fellow in Population Genetics.
The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception takes place at 1 p.m. in the
first floor parlor at Murray Hall. In the event Murray Hall is not available Sept.
24, the reception will be held at Willard Hall.
