Did you know that between the ages of 20 and 80, the average person can lose up to 40 percent of their muscle mass? This is important because muscles burn more calories per day than fat. Muscle loss and body fat gain appear to go hand-in-hand. To limit the amount of muscle mass lost as you age, make sure to include free weights and/or weight machines in your fitness program. Their use can slow muscle loss and even build additional muscle. Wellness tips are brought to you by the OSU Seretean Wellness Center, dedicated to making OSU the Healthiest Campus in America. For more information about services for students, faculty and staff, call 744-WELL (9355).

Did you know that carrying too much weight around your middle is a risk to your health? Measuring your waist is a simple way to gauge your risk. Place a tape measure around your bare abdomen just above your hip bone, or about one inch above your belly button. If your waist measures more than 40 inches (men) or 35 inches (women), look for healthy ways to trim the “waist,” such as cutting calories and increasing physical activity. Wellness tips are brought to you by the OSU Seretean Wellness Center, dedicated to making OSU the Healthiest Campus in America.
