(Stillwater, OK  April 10, 2009) -- The American Society of Architectural Illustrators has awarded Mohd Bilbeisi of Oklahoma State University first place in the informal sketch category of the 24th Annual International Competition of Architectural Illustrators. Bilbeisi, a professor of architecture, won the category with an illustration of the Dubai Aquamarina.

“It is a watercolor sketch that took twenty minutes to do and it was done on the spot while conversing with a person who was describing his vision of a high-rise development,” said Bilbeisi. “Sketching is a passion of mine. It is quite different from drawing and rendering. The emphasis is on speed, abstraction and impression.”

Bilbeisi has been teaching at OSU for eleven years. He said he is especially glad to win this competition because of the attention it will generate. “I am very excited about the opportunities this award will provide in helping us promote OSU’s School of Architecture and Oklahoma in international circles.”

The informal sketch category that Bilbeisi won with his entry is among only six special prize categories that are singled out for recognition each year at the international competition. The winning entries will highlight a traveling exhibit of about 60 pieces of artwork which will be on tour in America and abroad. The exhibition pieces are selected by a jury of respected professionals from the fields of architecture, illustration, journalism, and design education.

Bilbeisi currently teaches several courses including advanced graphics, theory of representation, and digital applications such as computer modeling.  He will travel to Miami in September to accept his prize at the ASAI International Convention. To view Bilbeisi’s winning entry, go to www.asai.org   and click at the appropriate place under the heading “AIP 24 Jury Selection and Results.”

Bilbeisi’s new book “Graphic Journaling” was published earlier this year. The book provides a unique critical academic view of the act of graphic journaling as an analytical and creative tool. It summarizes twenty years of research in the field of graphic communication and analysis, including interactions with hundreds of students in 14 countries.
