Students encouraged to travel “Smart and Safe” over Spring Break

(February 26, 2009) - Dr. Lee Bird, OSU vice president for Student Affairs, encourages
all OSU students to travel “smart and safely” over Spring Break, and to have a plan
whether they are leaving the country or not.
“For those leaving the country, check the State Department Web site to look for updates
regarding problems, or special conditions,” Bird said. “The State Department is currently
providing warnings regarding travel in border towns in or near Mexico.”
The State Department’s Web site can be found at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html .
Students also should consult their physicians to refill any medications they are taking
before traveling out of the country, and to see if special medications or shots are
recommended for their destinations.
“They need to inform someone where they will be staying, including phone numbers,
and provide a travel itinerary to a parent or non-traveling friend. They should make
sure their cell phones will work in those destinations, and check requirements for
passports, visas and identification,” Bird said.
Bird said many of the potential problems associated with Spring Break involve excessive
alcohol use.
“Drunk students make themselves targets for theft, violence and assorted legal problems,”
she said. “Alcohol-fueled sexual assaults, fights, injuries and other problems are
commonly, and unfortunately, associated with Spring Break travel.”
Not all students have the opportunity to travel for fun. Bird added that many students
work extra hours, get caught up with their studies or get involved with national service
projects, often called Spring Break Challenges.
“We want our students to have a safe and great Spring Break regardless of their plans
and return to complete their academic year,” she said.
