Twenty-three Oklahoma State University students received the SAS/OSU data mining certificate on Dec. 2, 2008. The SAS/OSU data mining certificate program is housed in the Spears School of Business and is the largest data mining program in the United States.

Data mining is the exploration and analysis of large quantities of data in order to discover meaningful patterns and rules. The SAS/OSU data mining certificate program began in 2004 when OSU partnered with SAS, a leading provider of data analysis and data mining software.

“There are currently more than 20 universities that have partnered with SAS to provide students with a certificate awarded jointly by the university and SAS in the area of data mining,” said Goutam Chakraborty, professor of marketing and founder of the OSU data mining certification program.  “OSU is the largest provider of such data mining certificates among all U.S. universities.”

Chakraborty said OSU’s data mining program is unique in the sense that it is housed in the school of business (marketing and MIS departments), unlike other data mining certificate programs which are usually housed in the statistics or computer science departments.

“Students in this program receive a broad-based exposure not just to data analysis, but also to data extraction and data management issues,” Chakraborty said. “Approved courses in this program are from various departments such as marketing, MIS, statistics and industrial engineering with emphasis on business applications.”

The program requires students to complete 12 credit hours of courses, including two core courses and two elective courses. The certificate program is a core component of the Masters of Science in management information systems degree.

“The last four years, more than 140 students from different disciplines (MIS, MBA, industrial engineering and statistics) have earned SAS/OSU data mining certificates,” Chakraborty said.
