Community Thanksgiving dinner set
The 26th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Thursday, Nov. 25, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Family Life Center at 7th and Duck in Stillwater, and there is still time to volunteer for a shift or to make donations.
The dinner is open to everyone in the community and is free of charge. OSU students who won’t make it home for the short holiday are urged to attend, and international students are especially invited to come and experience this unique American celebration. More than 800 meals were served last year.
The following food items are still needed: pre-cooked hams, cranberry or other fruit salads, and pans of sweet potatoes. All food can be dropped off at the First Methodist Family Life Center from 6 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday or between 7 and 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. Volunteers willing to work an hour and a half shift on Thanksgiving Day are also welcome. To donate food items or to volunteer for the dinner, call Pat Dorr at (405) 624-8689 and leave a message on his machine as to what you want to donate or when you would like to work.
For those who wish to make monetary gifts, checks may be made out to: Community Dinner– FUMC and mailed to Pat Dorr, 101 Georgia, Stillwater, OK, 74075. Any funds or food left over go to help provide food for the Love Feast and Mission of Hope Shelter for the Homeless.
The Dinner has truly been a community event over the years with the participation of over 200 volunteers, with many individuals, families, and groups making the dinner an annual tradition, according to Dorr. There is no sponsoring organization for the dinner; it is simply put on by the citizens of Stillwater contributing food items or volunteering their time.
Dorr calls the Community Thanksgiving Dinner “a joyous celebration of our community.” As he puts it, “Isn't this what the pilgrims intended? Remember, the dinner is for all people in Stillwater who want to share the warmth of this special day and show our thankfulness for the blessings that we are given.”
