Scholarship awards $5,000, allows for student employment

The Daily O’Collegian, OSU’s daily independent student newspaper, is pleased to announce the winner of its new scholarship.

Geoffrey Goldsmith of Victorville, Calif., will start at OSU this fall. He is the first-ever recipient of the O’Collegian Scholarship, a $5,000 award that’s renewable for four years for a total of $20,000.

The O’Collegian will grant the award annually to an incoming freshman, meaning that eventually, an OSU senior, junior, sophomore and freshman will all receive $5,000 per year from the O’Collegian Scholarship.

“The O'Collegian is thrilled to be able to provide this scholarship to an incoming freshman,” said O’Collegian General Manager Ray Catalino. He added that students who win the scholarship will not only get the award money, but will also have the opportunity to work up to 20 paid hours a week in all aspects of newspaper print and online production, from writing and editing to photography and video to ad sales to layout to circulation.

“Any awardee who is able to renew the scholarship for three additional school years will graduate with a thorough knowledge of how this business really works,” Catalino said.

Applicants were selected based on their interest in all aspects of media production, from journalism to video editing to advertising to graphic design. Geoffrey was selected based on his past experience in journalism, his writing ability, his scholastic performance and his interest in the field. Geoffrey plans to study sports media at OSU.

No stranger to Stillwater, Geoffrey participated in the OSU School of Media and Strategic Communications’ residential summer sports media summer camp for pre-college students.

“The Daily O' Collegian Scholarship transformed my likelihood of attending Oklahoma State from possible to probable,” Geoffrey said. “I had received other scholarships prior to receiving this, so I knew I could make it work by applying for loans if I had to, but that route would have been a lot more difficult financially. Receiving this from the O' Colly staff was like icing on the cake.”
