Thursday, September 23, 2010
The 2010 freshman class at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater has a record number
of 431 active participants in the Honors College this fall, an increase of 9.7 percent
over 2009. The previous best was 403 freshmen in 2005.
The total number of 919 active Honors College students this fall also establishes
a new record, eclipsing the total of 916 from the fall of 2006. In addition, a record
82 OSU students earned the Honors College Degree during the 2009-10 academic year.
This year’s Honors College students come from 134 Oklahoma communities, 27 other states,
and three other nations. They are the most diverse group in the history of honors
education at OSU with more than 14 percent coming from traditionally underrepresented
groups.
“We are excited by the tremendous response of this year’s freshman class to the opportunities
available through the Honors College,” said Dr. Robert Spurrier, Honors College director.
“And our faculty and honors advising staff will do their best to help them achieve
their goals.”
The Honors College Degree is the highest academic distinction available to undergraduate
students at OSU. The requirements of 39 honors credit hours including both curricular
breadth and research in the major leading to a senior honors thesis or project, as
well as graduating with a minimum 3.50 grade point average, are among the most demanding
of institutions that are members of the National Collegiate Honors Council.
