OSU Professor Elected President of National Biology Society

Donald French, a zoology professor at Oklahoma State University, has been elected the 2012 president of the National Association of Biology Teachers.

On Jan. 1, 2011, French officially begins his term as president-elect of the 5,000-member association.

“I am honored and extremely proud to be serving as NABT’s president-elect,” French said. “We have a great association that is committed to empowering educators to provide the best possible life science education for all students by encouraging research and the dissemination of best practices based on research.”

At OSU, French is the coordinator of the Certificate in University Faculty Preparation Program. He also coordinates and teaches OSU’s introductory biology course, which has an enrollment of more than 1,600 students each school year. He also teaches graduate courses.

His research focuses on teaching and learning of biology at the undergraduate level, and has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Environmental Protection Agency. He has published more than 30 articles in books and journals, and offered 170 presentations and workshops.

French is the recipient of many honors including the OSU Regents Distinguished Teaching Award, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Instructional Technology Excellence Award and the NABT Four-Year College and University Biology Research/Teaching Award, and the Outstanding Undergraduate Science Teacher Award from the Society for College Science Teachers. French also served as chair of NABT's Four-Year College and University Sections, and president of the Society for College Science Teachers.
