OSU Research Week to be held Feb. 15-19

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Research Week, Oklahoma State University’s seventh annual event dedicated to the arts, humanities and sciences, will take place Feb. 15-19, 2010, with a variety of activities on the OSU-Stillwater campus.  The week includes guest speakers and a number of other unique events highlighting the value of research to our state, our nation and our world.

As this year’s Research Week keynote speaker, OSU welcomes Dr. David Weinberger.   Called a “marketing guru” by the Wall Street Journal, Weinberger is the nation’s foremost, and funniest, interpreter of technology's impact on business and society.  He will give two presentations during Research Week.  The first, “Knowledge in the Age of Abundance,” will take place Feb. 17 at 1 pm in Student Union Case Study 3.  The second, “Is the Web Moral?” will take place on Feb. 17 at 7 pm in the Student Union Little Theatre.

OSU is also pleased to welcome Dr. Kirsten Sanford to Research Week.  As founder and host of the popular radio show This Week in Science, Dr. Sanford is dedicated to making science a part of everyone’s lives through creative science communication.  She is an at-large reporter for The Science Channel and has appeared on CBS’s The Doctors.  She will speak about “Science and Sensationalism” on Feb. 18 at 7 pm in the Student Union Little Theatre.

Dr. Gebisa Ejeta, winner of the 2009 prestigious World Food Prize, will speak during Research Week as part of the 18th annual Wes Watkins Distinguished Lectureship Series.  Dr. Ejeta is a distinguished professor at Purdue University and has spent his research career developing drought-tolerant plants for his home country of Ethiopia and the African continent.  He will speak about “Capacity Building: a Lasting Foundation for Development” on Feb. 16 at 1:30 pm in the Wes Watkins Center Auditorium.  His talk will include details about OSU’s contribution to development of higher education in Ethiopia and the return on investment from agricultural research.

In an event sponsored by the OSU Women’s Faculty Council, Research Week will also feature feminist activist and author Carol Adams and her lecture, “The Sexual Politics of Meat.”   Using images of women and animals from contemporary popular culture, Adams will explore the way society portrays race, gender and species to further oppressive attitudes.  The lecture will take place Feb. 19 at 3 pm in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room of the Edmon Low Library.  A book signing and reception will follow.

Research Week will include several other events and activities.  For a complete schedule of events, visit http://researchweek.okstate.edu.
