Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology’s Culinary Arts program is partnering
with Summit Industries NCS LLC, a Tulsa production company, to develop a new television
series called “The Culinary Kid.” The show, filmed by Blue House Media, will involve
10-year-old Remmi Smith preparing dishes similar to ones prepared in the Culinary
Arts kitchens at OSUIT. The series provides education to children and teaches them
and their families to choose more healthy food. For the past year in the cooking show, Remmi has been a young chef learning how to cook nutritious meals. “The Culinary Kid” will demonstrate the culinary requirements for each phase of OSUIT’s program in each episode of the series. Behind the scenes, Remmi will be required to study, practice, and develop her culinary knowledge and skills. She may also visit sites where healthy foods are grown or sold.
The “Cook Time with Remmi” series was developed as a creative approach to address the childhood obesity epidemic by linking the skill of cooking to improved nutrition for children. The show first appeared on the show’s website in April 2009. The original series has also aired on TPS Channel 20. In the series, Remmi prepared healthy and complete meals.
Some of Remmi’s accomplishments include a national honor from the Amazing Kids organization, including winning the national “Launch My Dream” contest. She is a spokesperson for the national Meatless Monday organization and was selected by Apple Computers, Inc. as a spokesperson at the recent Apple Education Leadership Institute. Remmi is sponsored by the Whole Foods grocery store, and she writes a monthly culinary column in “Tulsa Kids” magazine.
“The Culinary Kid” will air Cox Cable Channel 3, HD703 and on Cox’s Video on Demand starting in late November.
