The College of Arts and Sciences at Oklahoma State University recently recognized outstanding faculty and staff members at its Fall Convocation.

Douglas Droste, an associate professor of music, received the Wise Diggs Berry Award. The annual award is given to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in the visual, performance or written arts. Created in memory of her grandmother and mother, the honor was established by Malinda Berry Fischer, a 1960 OSU alumna.

Droste conducts the OSU Symphony Orchestra, serves as the string area coordinator and is an academic adviser. “Professor Droste is a highly skilled conductor and gifted teacher, as well as a very talented and highly respected performer on the violin, viola and trumpet,” said Regents Professor Peter M.A. Sherwood, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Three professors received the Junior Faculty Award for Scholarly Excellence. The award is presented in three academic discipline groups. Recipients were:

Arts and Humanities: Carol Mason, associate professor in English, and director of the Gender and Women’s Studies Program.
Natural Sciences: Mostafa Elshahed, assistant professor in microbiology and molecular genetics.
Social and Behavioral Sciences: Andrew Fullerton, assistant professor in sociology.

Three awards were presented to staff members. Pat Mann, an administrative assistant in the outreach department, received the top staff honor. Finalists were Karen Christian, an academic adviser in the school of media and strategic communications; and Moria Harmon, a lecturer in the department of zoology.

The Fall Convocation is among the many ways that the College of Arts and Sciences rewards excellence. Each year the awards are coordinated by the chair of the OSU Arts and Sciences Faculty Council. This year’s chair was Marc Krein, associate professor in the OSU School of Media and Strategic Communications. To learn more about the College of Arts and Sciences, visit http://www.cas.okstate.eu.
