Sigma Lamba Gamma Chapter Formed at OSU
Wednesday, March 3, 2010
A chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma, the nation’s largest Latina-based sorority, has been
established at OSU in Stillwater.
SLG was founded in 1990 at the University of Iowa, and is now the largest historically Latina-based multicultural sorority in the nation. It is an academic, cultural, service and social organization dedicated to promoting the empowerment of women in higher education, and its primary goal is to promote evolving and diverse cultures through sharing. It was established to promote standards of excellence in morality, ethics and education.
According to Brenda Morales, senior academic counselor in the OSU Inclusion Center for Academic Excellence, OSU women met in the fall of 2007 to discuss the potential of starting a Latina/Hispanic sorority. The first members were initiated on Nov. 20, 2009, and today the chapter has seven members.
“This is an important milestone for Oklahoma State University as we continue to grow in our efforts to achieve a university system that is socially, culturally and globally competent,” said Jason F. Kirksey, OSU interim associate vice president for Institutional Diversity.
